Street tires for autocross

I need to get new tires. I'm not ready to invest in separate wheels and tires for autocross - maybe next season, if I get good enough - so I'm looking for the best street tires for autocross. I have a 75 911S with 6Jx15 wheels; I understand the best size for that setup is 205/60-15, but options are pretty limited in that size. In high performance summer tires (as defined by Tire Rack) my choices are Yokohama AVS DB2; Yokohama AVS ES100 (only HR rated); Dunlop SP5000; and Michelin XGT V4. My mechanic strongly recommends against the Dunlops, the Michelins are more expensive than the others, so which Yokos will do best at ax (I realize this is a compromise...)?

They are also so popular with autocrossers that they are in short supply nationally at the moment.

Have you compared/reviewd the Max Performance Summer Tire options from Tire Rack? Those would be your best street tires for autocross.
You may also want to consider 205/55/15's to broaden your selection. The difference in overall diameter from your current tires would be 0.8". FWIW, the Bridgestone S-03 Pole Positions are available in that size and generally considered one of the best street/autocross tires.

Thanks for your input! I have S-02s on an 88 Carrera but don't use that car for autocross (it has 14,000 miles and is too pristine to take on track) and they are terrific. I assume S-03s would be similar.

Using a 205/50-15 should allow you to go to a 7x15 rear wheel. When I was doing lots of autox events in the late 80s/early 90s I found the combo of 6x15s in the front and 7x15s in the rear, both with 205/50-15 was pretty balanced. The 10% gearing improvement from the stock 185/70-15 didn't hurt either.

I like the Yoko AVS ES100's....though the version in my size are V rated IIRC.
I dont see any reason to spend large amounts of money on tires (S03's, pzero's...etc) that you're just going to burn up at the track. In 15" sizes ES100's are probably under $100 a tire.

Yoko AVS are great street tires, but pretty slick on autocross and track. My car never stopped squealing around the autocross track.
More slipperier than previous AVS Intermediate.

For bang for the buck, you cannot do better than the Falken Azeni RS Sport. Unfortunately, they are only available in a 205/50-15, which is a lower aspect ratio. This will help in autox but hurt your mileage on the street, as it will lower your final drive ratio.
They are also so popular with autocrossers that they are in short supply nationally at the moment.
