My PCM Upgrade Choice for 997 Cab
Hi all -
I'm picking up my 2006 997.1 Cabriolet today and the first upgrade I'm planning to do is to update the PCM. I had my sights set on the Pioneer 4200NEX but after a little due diligence, my radio installer told me that the faceplate can be removed when the car is turned off. Considering I'm sure I'll leave my car parked for short periods of time with the top down, I think that's a big problem with that unit. Interested in what other cabriolet owners think.
He recommended the Kenwood 9903S as a great alternative. I haven't seen a whole lot mentioned about this unit but the online reviews appear to be good. I have the Bose package so parts and labor for the head unit, bezel, new JLH amp, harnesses and backup camera (with infrared) will be $2k. I'm also planning on getting the black bezel and painting the rest of the front console (A/C area) to match.
Open to all feedback on my first post.
Thanks,
Ehab

The reviews for the Kenwood do not look great. I have Pioneer 4000NEXes in two of my other vehicles and absolutely love them. Seamless usability and CarPlay is incredible.
Based on the reviews for the Kenwood, I wouldn't touch it.

As someone in the industry, I'm going to echo Mark's evaluation. The Kenwood unit's right now are just sub par. Go with the NEX4200, you'll be happiest with that.
As for the removable faceplate, it's only removable if the key is on since the face needs to motorize down to reach the release tab. As a side note, I just wouldn't leave the top down if there's any question that someone might attempt something — that's just common sense, though.
