Speaker recone needed
One of my factory Alpine subs needs a recone. Can you recommend a location to perform this service? What is the typical price of having this done?
Thanks

There are companies out there that do it. There is one here in WA, don't know if it would be cost effective for you. You might give them a call and see if they can recommend someone on the east coast. They do list Alpine on the website as one brand they rebuild. I haven't had them do work for me (yet), but they are recommended by someone I trust very much in the industry.

The only thing I could see "theloudspeakerstore" do is repair tears in the surround.
Alpine subs were not designed for recone.
You literally have to cut everything out so you would need a complete new cone with coil, spider & surround. Your only salvaging the magnet & basket.
Best to buy a new one.

I have some a/d/s woofer's they will rebuild, which will save me a bunch of shipping since they are local instead of sending them to Richard So, THE a/d/s guru.

Tony,
Thanks for the reference. i have learned much now. The first bit of news is that my speakers don't need reconing. They need something called re-edging. i did not know this but there is a different material between the speaker cone and the speaker frame and that is what has deteriorated away. The speakers work, they just sound terrible because of this but once the repair is done they'll be back to new. The next bit if great news is the cost, re-edging is only $40 per speaker.
the guys at the loudspeaker store were great and very helpful.
Thanks to all for your help here. I'll post once I have them back and review the final result.
Thanks
Jeff

Are you doing this yourself or having someone do it for you? If you are doing it yourself (it is extremely simple to do) the most important step is making sure the foam allows for full movement of the cone. After the glue begins to set you need to carefully move the cone in and out to make sure it has full travel. If not it will change the sound otherwise it is pretty simple.

Thanks Anthony, I pulled the speakers out of the car myself but I'm going to send them to the experts for the repair. I was thinking I was going to have to spend a lot more on replacements and it looks like I'll have the full job done on both speakers for less than $100 so I'm happy with that.
