Just installed the Sharkwerks exhaust bypass on the 997.2 Turbo. Just wanted to let anyone out there deciding between exhausts that are not removing the cats, this car with no muffler is still not loud at all! This must be one of the quietest turbo engines out there. Even with just the pipes, doubtful anybody who's passenger would think it's anything more than an optional sport exhaust at most. Don't hesitate to install just pipes, any muffler would be disappointing. No drone/resonating, etc. It's not loud whatsoever.

From our experience, you really need a full 3" system, including dual 3" tips to get a noteable increase in sound out of the 997.2TT - something like this...

True, for you guys that don't like loud cars, I'd say the car is a 3 out 10 OEM and probably a 6 out of 10 with the Sharkwerks or any of these other muffler less solutions. Don't worry about it being too loud. You def need to start playing with the cats before it's actually anywhere near obnoxiously loud.

Exactly. IMO, 3" with cats is a sweet spot for the 997.2TT. Catless turns it aggressive, for those that want an aggressive meaner sound.

Interesting. What's the technical explanation for this difference, compared to 997.1 TT?

Two questions:

1) Coming from the Chevy LS3, are any of these exhaust options that kind of loud? A V8 can get obnoxious pretty quick. Are any of the TT exhaust options that extreme?

2) Never gone catless. No need with my past V8's. Is there visible exhaust smoke with a catless system?

Want burbles and pops and all that sexiness. But don't want pedestrians to think "WTF is that guy's problem" when I drive by. Just want them to think "damn that's sexy" 😂

Being a V8 guy myself, I got my 997tt with exhaust on it already. It was catless but had mufflers and just wasnt enough. It sounded good but was quite to me.

So I went with the Fabspeed straight pipes(no cats or mufflers) and holy hell did it wake it up. Car sounds amazing! Im sure to most its too much but hearing those turbos spool up and the pops you get on hard shifts its worth the noise. On the highway not bad at all with the windows closed. You do get some drone at lower rpms but its really not that bad.

Cruising in town in second at 3k is awesome.Turns heads, maybe in a bad way but who cares

If you really want some burble/overrun out of that turbo you're going to have to go catless with a pretty aggressive muffler setup like our muffler bypass pipes. Will have cabin noise, but it'll sound pretty excellent on throttle and decel!

To answer the above questions, yes the car is still quieter than a stock GT3 RS, or stock GT350 by a substantial amount, no one would get annoyed on the street walking by you. You need 200 CEL cats plus a muffler delete for this car to actually be loud. Removing the muffler with just pipes, no one would know it's anything more than a factory optional sport exhaust option. Complete cat delete or a 100 cell cat would be obnoxious levels of loud. You need 200 CEL cats and muffler delete for a good balance. Factory is 400 just FYI.

Following up on this thread a year later, I reinstalled my OEM muffler, and went catless, there is a deep sound around idle, and a touch of droning at very low RPMs close to idle. Sound loudness is a 3/10 stock, 6/10 with no muffler, and 7/10 with no cats. I'm thinking of going muffler-less and catless at the same time. I think the cats remove 60% of the sound, and the muffler 40% more or less if I were to take a guess.

Has anyone here tried going catless with just a straight pipe exhaust? Is there lots of drone? How is it? I'm starting to get annoyed to how quiet these turbos make this engine. I just don't want to go overboard.
