Would you buy a 996TT?

996 tt is an incredible bang for the buck performance wise, but simply lacks in the looks dept for me...but that holds true for all the 996s, well except the gt2 for some reason

I have both cars.. Great addition to the garage. If you have a coupe, buy a 996TT cab. A lot of performance for the buck. I have seen many customer buy them new, and then move away to another car and then come back. It's a great "driver" Awesome track car!

If you grab one with a X50 package, it bumps it to 450 hp.
Most of us don't like the looks of a 996, but performance wise, it's priced right.
And honestly, the more I look at it, it's growing on me.

The 996TT with K16 equipped with tuning would be better suited > less lag, better acceleration vs X50 w/ K24 turbochargers (in my opinion)..
The 997TT does everything great, the 996TT is less refined. But very potent. With analog suspension upgrades, it tough to beat at the track.
Since you have a cab, get a coupe..

Other than accoutrements they are mostly the same car.
There are upsides to having two of the same car: You don't have to fill your brain with all the idiosyncrasies of two models or even manufacturers in order to keep the car from getting destroyed by you of the dealer services. Parts can to some extent be swapped around, for budget classics this can mean having a working ride more often than someone with two different cars. (not sure that either tt is really a budget car, in so much that if you can afford them, you can afford a rental or a car service while your car is down). Of course if you track one of them an daily drive the other, the mind-share goes double.
So, if you need two cars, it can make sense.
But if you're talking as part of a collection, then a 997tt and a 996 doesn't really make sense, well, not unless you're the Sultan of Brunei (and if you are, I'd like to have a word with you on non-car related topics). If you're just an automotive enthusiast with some disposable cash, looking for the next toy, try something totally different. Perhaps a lotus, or something american.
FWIW, the look of the 996 has really grown on me. Enough so that I sometimes wonder about trading my 997 for a 996 and putting the difference to work in some way (then I come to my senses and focus on my day job ). Finally, a 996 is a pretty old car at this point and the time spent keeping the interior and trim up and a 15 year old daily driver is something I don't really want to add to my list of chores at this point in my life.

I would love a 996TT, i love the extra tight cockpit and less refinement. It feels like a little rocket while my 997 feels a bit larger. I also love the doors on the 996, much cooler than the 997.

I didn't own a 996 TT, but I owned a 996 C4S. It was a great car. I would have no issue with buying a 996 TT, other than storage space!

I had a 996 C4 and really loved it. I hadn't been into a Porsche for 8 yrs and it was my first one back. Great car and I really didn't mind the headlights all that much. I'd buy one.

I have both, and went through this last year and decided I wanted a 996tt as a DD. In fairness, I've owned two 996tt's already, but this is my first cab.
It's not a great choice for me as a DD, honestly, because it's a hassle with car seats and kids. There's not a lot of space to haul stuff either, obviously. BUT, I don't want to part with it either. It's a great car to shoot around in just like a 997tt is. My 997tt is my "keeper" car, you know the car they'd have to pry the keys from your corpse. On the other hand, because I worry about the 996tt less, I enjoy driving it more than a garage queen. Rain, dirt, parking lots, etc bother me less.
Of course, I have also enjoyed bringing the 996tt back up to nice quality too. Fixing things wrong with it, righting other owners' wrongs, etc. That's a big part of car enjoyment to me too. Nice 996tt values seem to be on the upswing too, so I can drive it for relatively little cost.
If headlights are the only reason people don't like these cars, they need to get over themselves... They are really a great car.
