I track my turbo regularly. And I also drive it on the weekends. My point, I want my car to look more track ready than the stock version. Yes, like the GT3, but love the turbo power. I'm considering taking out the "useless" back seats entirely and installing a roll cage just like the GT3. I love the esthetics. In addition, I've learned there are several performance benefits such as less weight (back seat removal), it stiffens the frame and it will allow a five point harness installation.
Some may ask, why don't you go buy a GT3? Well, because I love the turbo and especially the performance and I enjoy passing GT3's on the track.
I have a Porsche MotorSports cage in my GT2 without the front or side bar. I don't have the time to be serious at this anymore or I would put them in. (So it is really a roll bar...a cage would wrap around you. Horizontal by the doors and down a pillar...).
In another dedicated track car I had a certified custom 11 point cage with front and side bars. I went with mild steel instead of chrome Molly since you get better energy absorption...but heavier...
These Pcars carry a lot of speed...even in a "DE" things get out of control really quick...get a cage and real harness...or you'll just have to get a roll bar and harness.
Deleting rear seats deducts weight...adding a cage adds weight...
Putting a cage in a TT will negatively impact the resale value of your car. A roll bar will do less damage...either way you'll be cutting up your car, and bolting through the body...so do a clean job.
As far stiffening...a full cage that ties the front and rear of the unibody will stiffen the car for sure. But it will also affect your chassis dynamics.
If you are getting serious get a different car. If you are on your way to get serious get a real 4-6 point roll bar (not a poser bar) and Schroth harness.
I had a GMG World Challenge Roll Bar, Schroth 6pt harnesses and carbon fiber sport seats installed last year. Aside from writing the check, it's no big deal and easily reconverted if need be. Since I drive the car on the street, I kept the oem 3pt belts for that purpose and when on the track use a $3 seatbelt plug (Ebay) to keep the chimes from ringing. You want a 6 pt harness; 4 points will not pass PCA tech as you can slide out (submarine) underneath from them in an impact and a 5 pt puts your family jewels at risk. Definitely ditch the rear seats and make sure your rear windows are clean before installing the bar. Unless you're a very small person or a contortionist it may be quite awhile before you get back there again!
PS You can also get "rear seat delete hardware" to fill in the gaps and make the job look professional.
Steamboat. gmg uses eye bolts correct? Do you get a rattle with this set up? I'd prefer to have the harness wrapped around the bar.
I honestly don't know how they are attached and since the car is in winter storage 30 miles away, I'm afraid I'll remain ignorant until spring arrives. How ever they are attached, there is no rattle in any event. Best,
Really appreciate the feedback! Did a little research on the GMG web page. This is exactly what I'm looking to do. Again, the rear seats are useless and typically the one thing most people ridicule because they are basically non-functional. I prefer things that have purpose and the back seats don't serve one. My intent is to do this top notch and have professionals do the work.
I understand it may hurt the re-sale value to the typical buyer, but I'm not concerned. Its going to stay with me. I've waited 20 years to own this car and it's not going anywhere.
I've got a lot of mods lined up to do, but it's going to be done slowly and professionally. Next week I'm having sway bars installed.
This summer will be a good time to do the roll bar and harness upgrade.
Runner I can think of many more bang for the buck track performance mods you can do way before you come to a roll bar. Unless you plan on rolling the car its probably a waste of $$$ IMO.
Congrats on your turbo. I have a 2007 myself, heavily modified. My suggestion is to think very hard as to exactly what you ultimately want the car to do. If you are hell bent on beating GT3 or GT3 RS on the track, it will take a lot of money and major modifications. I am there now, but trust me, it takes a lot to do that.

Hi Walt! I was hoping you would chime in. You know I'll listen to you.
I'll take it slow. This is something I want to do later down the road to clean out the back seats. I like the factory sport seats and need the roll bar to make the harness work. Plus it looks cool.

You are my hero.
Your advise is like my technician's. He is slowing me down and wants me to report back after each DE. He wants to know how the car performed and how my experience was like. The feedback always ends up on what should be the next thing.
He's advise is to do one thing at a time.

Walt what's keeping you in your seat? I find that my arms and chest are sore for 2 days after an event. Running oem adaptives at the moment .

I've got the same seats as you. And as you, I'm sore all over. My right knee especially because it's planted against the console. I like the seats, but need to add the harness and therefore the reason for the roll bar.
