I did a bunch of searches here hoping to get a definite answer on whether to use 0W40, 5W40 or 5W50...I ended up more confused than where I started haha..so I decided to stick with 0W40.
I will switch to 5W50 for the next oil change.

When I was getting a PPI for the car, Scott from Mcilvain Motors in PHX said he hates the mobil one oil.
He recommended Total Quartz 9000 Energy - 5W40.

As mentioned above.. You are running a 30 weight oil.. However, the engine wear isn't bad.. To keep your fuel mileage up.. You might want to blend 0W40 and 5W50 Mobil 1.. If you are tracking the car.. Run 5W50 Mobil..
You could come over the fence and run Redline...

I have Mobil 1 5W50 queued up in my cart at NAPA. it's on sale for 5.99 a quart.
Will buy an keep it here for the next oil change (maybe 4-5K from now).

Hi Kevin, I have a tuned 996 Turbo S (x50), I saw in your post above you're running each of Motul, M1 and Redline. Is Redline (blended?) the best for the 3.6 Mezger tt?
Car is parked in temperature-controlled garage, not winter driven, and *very spirited* on the weekends
(am planned to re-tune with you soon...)

996TS, I recommend that you send a oil sample to Blackstone and get a baseline. Post your results.. I assume that you are running Mobil 1 0W40 right now?
I am running the blended 50/50 ratio 0W40/5W50 Redline in one of my 996TT, 997TT and 991TTS (running a 60/40 ratio).
Am running Motul 5W50 Sport in another 996TT and Mobil 1 0W40/5W50 blend in another...
It is my opinion backed by what I see with Blackstone reports that the Redline blend has continued to perform very well (including many of my customers reports that are sent to me for review).
The perfect Holy Grail is to find the oil that lowers the metal wear or freezes it as you put miles on the engine. You have to test your oil. Don't let your oil shear near and into a 30 weight It happens!!
I look for the highest VI in a certain weight. I compare the HTTS specs. I prefer full Synthetic Ester oils. Go get the different oil manufacturer spec sheets and compare the different oils>>then find UOA that are posted on the net.
On a side note.. I have a customer that has switched to Amsoil Classic in his 993TT (UMW Stage 1 hybrid K16's, 100 Cell cats, Tuned) Curious to see his numbers..

Thank you Kevin, what oil change mile intervals are you advising / performing?

I change my oil at 3K, max is 3.5K miles.. I have noticed that as you get towards 5K miles the metal wear increases... Oil is cheap, well it use to be LOL. Dump it and motor on..
It's not one size fits all. We all drive our cars differently.. Weekend/daily/track use.. Send your oil samples to Blackstone and look at your metal wear.

How you found any difference between Motul Sport and 300v Competition 5w-40?

300V is a great oil. Watch the TBN detergent levels..
The 5W40 is a little light. I would be wanting it near the 50W
Motul tends to run light on the viscosity vs other manufactures (my opinion based on what I have seen)
Redline tend to run on the heavier edge that's why I run it blended.
Motul 5W50 sport is good oil right out of the jug.
Another topic is chain/intermediate shaft engine idle noise. Running the higher 5W50 or blended Redline quiets down these engines vs 0W40 and 5W40 oils..

Just wanted to get some input on a new to me 09 Turbo that I picked up. I did my first oil change and sent a sample off to blackstone and just got the results today - seems pretty alarming. As far as I know the previous owner changed the oil with 0w-40 (guessing it was Mobil1) and had it done a little over a year ago and ~10,000km ago.

Maybe consider doing a "flush" process to clean out any impurities that could be within the engine.
Perform another oil change soon, then another at 1,500km, then a longer one (3,000km) and sending in a sample of the last one in for analysis.
I have been running Amsoil 5w-40 MS and have found oil pressure and consumption improved (over M1 0w-40)
