997.1 vs 997.2 handling
Hey Guys,
New member here with a question.
My daily driver for the past 8 years has been my E39 M5, which I still love. I have a Z4M coupe for weekend duty and the pair has done well for me. Still the game has moved on, and I’m beginning to desire some more power and newer gear for my daily driver. The new F10 M5 is too big for me, but the upcoming F80 M3 may fit the bill. However, I’m not sure I can give up my M5 as it runs and looks as new. So the thought came to add a 997.1 TT, keep the M5 and alternate both as daily drivers. The subtleness of the M5 is one reason I love it so much, and it seems that the 997 TT in a sliver or gray will provide a similar experience (or as close as one can get to “subtle” for a near supercar experience). The price of 997.1 TTs is right as well.
While doing my research, I came across many (generally favorable) reviews of the 997.1 TT that note the handling as a weak spot, and this has been re-enforced by some threads I’ve read on Porsche forums (mostly on Rennlist, actually!). I’m not likely to track the car, so I can’t imagine that the 997.1 TTs handling will seem lacking to me, but I’m willing to buy a 997.2 (possibly waiting another year – clearly this is not an urgent purchase!) if the handling is much better.
Contrasting this, I've also read many positive things about the Mezger engine (dry sump, reliability, etc.). Manual tranny for me for sure, so tip vs. PDK is not an issue. Ok, I'm a bit confused (doesn't help that I'm a Porsche newbie!).
Any thoughts/opinions are welcome.
Thanks!

Either one you won't go wrong. Although the former has better mod potential. The handling is far from diabolically bad especially for what you want to do. And a decent alignment is a cheap and very worthwhile game changer anyway.
First things first, get the car....

Yes, a TT-1 is useless on the road, first corner and you're out.

The car with stock suspension and a good alignment will do 95% everything you want. For the other 5% all I did was springs, sway bars w/ end links, and GT3 LCAs and I just got back from the race track for a DE. The car was amazing!!! I was off about 1 sec a lap from another member's 2010 GT3 RS with all the suspension goodies. Not too shabby.

OP: you are probably refering to the softer chassis of the 997.1 coup compared to the 997.2...Consider the Cab which proved softer is better.....Both 997tt 1 or 2 are some of the best cars on the road...I have yet to hear of an owner that dislikes them.

I can almost assure you that the 997.1 does not have anywhere near bad handling! It may not be the very BEST but its certainly very good. I will also tell you that your M5 will probably see the garage more then ever before.

They say that there is no substitute for cubic displacement. I recon there is no substitute for forced induction! Especially a twin turbo!
Two weeks ago we had a nice run with a friend of my service specialist/tuner in a very quick M5. In a straight line, with no gas, I was ahead of him maybe half a car's length and slowly increasing to probably 120-130 when we stopped. However I will note that when I filled up with 60 liters of fuel, and the road turned uphill he did manage to pull away from me ever so slow, and when we passed a certain ridiculous speed, even more. So under conditions, there is no substitute for cubic displacement. But I will take forced induction every day! That push at WOT is spectacular.
I agree that the M5 will be staying in more and more once you get a turbo. Enjoy the search!

I have been on Renntech for a long time and I realize that my turbo brothers are here are here on Rennlist!! Just to chime in on the handling of the 997-1 TT. it does handle great "out of the box" but when pushing the car harder it does have a nasty understeer. Fortunetly for me I have met a Turbo master that has experimented with his set up and helped me out.. Springs, sway bars and (like the others say) a great alignment. Amazing now.. I have had many sports cars. Normally aspirated Porsches and BMW's. My 997 TT is the most awesome car I have ever owned by far...Get one...You will never be sorry. It makes me smile everyday...And I do drive it everyday!

Welcome Phillip, would you mind presenting your car on the forum? Always fun to see a nice turbo !
Once my car is registered and can make some nice pictures I am going to show of my car on here !

I think it is time for a tune Nick?
Good to see you've got it out! Nice video! Is that vbox lite? Btw how are those HLT OZ driving? Much difference from the stock wheels?
