Default Shipping tires .... ??

I need some help here. I have 4 tires that a guy wants to buy, but he's quite a bit out of state. I'll have to ship the tires.

I've shipped tires before. Some carriers want them boxed, some will take them with just a cardboard shipping label in a plastic bag. Prices were all over the place.

Looking for some advice, recommendations and experience here.

Thanx, guys. I appreciate it a great deal.

Fedex Ground will take the tire w/o a box in my area, they should be able to show you how to properly label, so the UPC can be read. prices usually started around $20 per tire, but IIRC, fedex has gotten more expensive.

Thanx, Ed ....

Yeah ...that's what I tho't would be a rough estimate of the cost to ship.

I'll check with FedEx and see 'door-to-door' cost. But, it's always easier to buy locally. And, shipping is such a pain in the you-know-what.

Thanx again.

Tire Rack's tires don't come in a box. What about taping the tires together in pairs (of 2) and shipping Greyhound??

Yes, that's true. I've received TR tires and they were not boxed. Additionally, I received 2 motorcycle tires last week that were zip tied together and tossed in a less than sturdy clear plastic bag via FedEx.

Yes, like those great bags they use at the airport for some checked luggage.

I suggest you go to your local UPS store and check their price. I use them all the time to ship various car stuff from Wheels to exhaust systems. I seriously doubt tires need to go in a box. I sold as set of winter tires to someone in Texas and took them to the UPS store and they shipped without a box.

Tires do not need to go in a box. You can buy tire shipping materials from Tire Rack and ship UPS, Fedex, or even Greyhound ground.

I've shipped tires and wheels quite a few times. My move is to wrap a pair of tires using stretch wrap from Staples. Bind two tires together using clear packing tape and then wrap it tightly with Staples stretch wrap. I found that FedEx Ground is the cheapest way to ship tires and just use their online service to generate the shipping label. Then just schedule a pick and they'll pick it up right from your front door.

Here's a picture of my last set waiting for FedEx pick up . . .

you can bind them in pairs, with clear tape or plastic straps

Thanx, guys .... I shipped the tires via FedEx. Took them in unwrapped and unboxed. They put shipping tags inside and outside and 2 days later they were in MI from CT. Cost was ~ $89 including $400 insurance. Worked out well.
