Default Advice...

Ok im gonna throw this out there cause i know what you guys will probably say but........ I flew with a friend on this last 4 day trip and he has a Cayman S, he is sending it to TPC racing to have it turbocharged this week, when done it will make 500 horsepower and supposedly be faster than a 997turbo and GT3 around a racetrack (not that i plan on racing). We talked about it all 4 days and i started thinking I could buy a nice Cayman and have that done as well and not have to wait 10 months or so to get into a 997 turbo. Or I could also buy a straight 997 and have that turbo'd as well for not much more total cost. What do you guys think about that???

Pluses
I could do it now, which has me a little enthralled.
The car is super fast and TPC has a good reputation
Would most likely handle a little better (the Cayman)
Its still a Porsche
Could be in it for about 58000 dollars
Could buy a newer car with less miles

Minuses
Resale value would still plummet whereas the 997turbo will probably flatten out in the low 60's high 50's in the longer term
Would void any warranty if the car i bought did have one
Its not in its pure form from the factory which kind of bothers me
The looks of the Cayman does not stir my soul like the 997 turbo

Most likely I will still go with a 997 turbo or possibly GT3, but i would appreciate your opinions on this.

Just remember that TPC takes your money to turbocharge it but I don't think they give any warranty and the factory warranty will be voided. You blow it up and you are stuck with it. Best to wait for the real deal from Porsche.

I would go with a Turbo or a GT3 - 996 GT3 would be similar money and would run all day, no issues and probably be just as fast and way more reliable.

After market turbo kits kill the value of the car, unless you find the needle in the haystack buyer who wants what you have. Plus the reliability is compromised. When you push it on the track you will be pushing it past the limit and then KaBOOM! and you need a new motor with no warranty!

Many have been down the path you are on before, I have, and you will wish you just went with a Turbo or GT3 - you will save money in the long run and have something to sell in the end.

Good Luck with your decision.

Agree - plus you'd be lucky to recover 50% of your cost when you sell.

Thanks thats pretty much what I was thinking, I like the Cayman alot but I think if i was sitting at a Red light and a turbo pulled up next to me I would probably be wishing I had waited for that.

We offer a year warranty on the parts that we install Larry, perhaps you should come and see one.

I would recommend driving your friends car when they get it back OP.

I dont understand the dilemma...
What is the objective? Not to wait 10 months? If so, you can get a used TT or whichever model you can have. Is the problem not wanting to get into a used car? Or could the cayman be used as well?
If you wish to wait for a new 911, but cannot wait until then, then get something marketable in between (as in small depreciation curve within the next 10 months) or enjoy your gorgeous 964. But there should not be a mix up between a turbo charged Cayman and a 911TT, there are different cars. One is not a replacement for the other.

Good luck.

Also, there is no substituting for the car that you "really want"... if you want a 997 Turbo, hold out. They are great cars, however the prices are starting to climb again

No problem. We actually offer 1 year on the parts that we make regardless of who installs them.

turbo charging or supercharging an engine that is not designed for that purpose, in my opinion, is not a good idea. normally aspirated engines in these cars are designed for high compression whereas the forced induction engines are low compression. also the warranty issued by the manufacturer of the turbo charger does not cover the engines themselves only the parts they install.

This is exactly what the Cayman needs to be a great car, I can't believe Porsche has not done it themselves.

Elkheart Lake in a fast track. I think that is the first time I've seen a video from there. I'd like to drive that in my car.
