996TT, 997TT or Z06 - Ex Porsche owner, needing feedback

Hi,

I know subjects like this have been debated to death, but that's why this is a forum !

I live in Guatemala, Central America

I owned a 964 C4 '90 for 1 year. Everybody loved the car, but I ended up selling it, because it lacked power and handling from what I expected in a Porsche -- Sold the car for US$ 26,000.00 with 25,000 miles

Today I test drove a 996TT '01 and my faith for Porsche is back ! The car is in pristine conditions and has only 15,000 Miles -- It has 1 year warranty from the exclusive Porsche dealer here and asking price is US$ 85,000.00

In the showroom they have a 997TT '07 -- The car is new and it has the Sport Chrono package -- Asking price is US$ 163,500.00

The Chevy dealer has a brand new Z06 -- Asking price is US$ 90,000.00

First of all, prices here are much higher than the USA, so don't get scared !

Well, I am really confused now... I know the 996TT is no match against the Z06, but the price of these 2 cars is killing me ! The Z06 is brand new, the 996TT has been used for 6 years... -- The clever person would choose the Z06, but does any of you know if the car is tricky regarding handling or not ? I would not drive it without traction control turned off !

The 997TT is my dream car, but the price is too much... If I buy it, I would keep it forever as my baby ! But is it really worth it against the used 996TT or the new Z06 ?

I love the 3 cars, just want to know your impressions on each one:
996TT
997TT
Z06

Thanks in advance for your comments !

I was faced with a similar dilemna - 997TT or Z06. My family said, one is a Porsche and the other is a Chevy....Seriously, although the Z06 matches the 997TT in most performance characteristics, the Porsche has two 'baby seats', better quality, 4WD, and...it's a Porsche.

Z06 is nice but its defintely not a porsche.

The interior makes me want to puke.

Definitely the 996TT. AWD, 4 seats, tons of room to upgrade the power as desired. And it's a PORSCHE.

997 tt hands down if it's with in your financial means, other wise new Z06. Car pricing there is obviously over inflated but the depreciation hit on the Z will be less then the 01 996. I had an 06 Z06 and other then the shabby interior found the car well built and a monster of a sports car, beat or kept up with the best at twice the price. FYI on the vette: if you keep TC off be prepared for over steer conditions out of the turns, the car gets very tail happy.

i had a 996tt, i then bought and still have a 997tt. i also have a brand new 08 c6 coupe (not a z06). quality, porsche wins hands down, but those cars cost 3-4 times what the vette costs, so what did you think was going to happen? my 997tt is quicker than my c6, but not by much. i would imagine that a z06 would give the 997tt a real race. for a northeastern guy like me, if i needed one car, i would get the 997tt (awd, snow=get home safe) if you are asking would i take the new z06 over the similar priced 996tt, the answer is probably, barring the neeed to have one car to tackle the weather.

Yes, but you will be a little slower at the track.

if you could somehow find a 2002 or 2003 996 it would be a lot better for peace of mind than the 2001 which doesn't actually have a glove box. I don't really like the interiors of the 996 so if it came down to pricing issues and you absolutely can't afford my first choice the 997tt, i'd take the zo6. the main problem with the 996 is that if the roads are bad you'll experience either a stock suspension that's already wasted (6+ years of punishment) or will be soon, and I'm guessing mechanics and parts aren't any cheaper if the car is so much more money.

997tt
new zo6
996tt

in that order.

I like them both for different reasons. The Z06 is fun to drive and actually the interior is quite nice and comfortable. Remember, the Z06 is almost 60-70K less that a 997TT depending on how the Turbo is equipped.

Overall, the Z06 is obviously a very fast competitor to the 997TT, but it's a great value as well.

Drive on!

But is it quicker and does it handle as well as the tt? You have both, give us the low down...

Default Shallow but true...

I've always remembered this quote from the movie, Tequila Sunrise.

"You meet at Orville and Wilbur's every Christmas. He throws his Chevrolet keys on the bar. You throw your Porsche keys on the bar. You pick up your drink with a gold Rolex on your wrist. He wears a Timex. Even if he wasn't a cop he'd hate your guts."

Not that life is all about posing or a sausage contest but it has truth to car guys like us.

I will pick the 996TT over Z06.

You should also consider the new Nissan GT-R, which I think is the direct competitor of Z06 in terms of price and performance.

Hi ...

I can only speak for myself..having owned a 964 C2 for 5 years...and now a 996 TT for 10 days....

996TT is a beast.
I would prefer it (pricewise cheaper + less depreciation) over 997 TT
I would buy 997 TT if money were not a problem at all.....

I wouldn't bother for Chevy...since it will never reach porsche quality in any terms (personal opinion)

harris

overall a 996 TT....
