Question TURBO S RELEASE DATE

Hello all,

I did a search not only on here but on the internet as well and didn't find the answers I needed so I'll ask. Do any of you know for sure NOT rumors if Porsche is going to come out with a 997 Turbo S and if so when? My girlfriend's boss told us that his local dealer is trying to talk him into a Turbo because they said they aren't for sure when or if a Turbo S will be released. I would think if they are coming out with one it would be with in a year or two because the next generation 911 (998) will be out in a few years. He ws going to wait for the S. Anyway, if any of you have dealers that know what they're talking aobut please let me know.

Thanks,
2Brak

Probably not going to be released for a while since they tend to add Turbo S models towards the end of the model cycle.

Expect it towards the end of the model run if the 997TT is anything like the 996TT.

waiting for a turbo s is foolish. only benefits of the S are slightly more power, slightly stronger residual value, and I guess more exclusivity. But anyone who can afford a 120k+ GT car certainly shouldn't be swayed by any of these factors... a simple reprogrammed chip in a TT will offer more power than a stock Turbo S, for substantially less money. As far as residual value, again - shouldn't be an issue for buyers of $120k cars. And exclusivity? Give me a break. Buy the car because you like driving it, not to show off to your friends.

all imho, of course...

i agree with you, 100%. learn from the 996 turbo s-a little bit more horsepower for a bunch more money.

Thanks for the input guys. Pcar964, Although I may agree with you that not everyone is practical and sensible, and that there are people who buy just to be over the top. Case in point, a tricked out Gemballa Carrera GT, or taking an Enzo and "upgrading" the wheels. I guess because they can? or they want to? but I am not going to judge someone for it. There are 997 Turbo, 996 GT2 and as well cocumented even Carrera GT owners out there who can't drive woth a sh^%t but yet they want a chip or exhaust? know what I mean? To my original question, it doesn't look like an S is coming anytime soon, if at all.

I am sure you know the 996 came out as a 1999 model and stayed till 2004 included, that's a 6 year deal. The 997 then should stay unchanged until the 2010 model.
the first 998 should be a 2011 model year, so the turbo S most likely will be the model year before that.
By waiting that long (2 1/2 years from now), people will be just wasting time for a slightly better car which will be followed the next year by a brand new 998 model.

i think the horsepower is 480 hp with the boost-i believe that you are referring to the variable turbine geometry giving a temporary (10 sec) increase in torque up to 530 ft/lbs.

Actually, the hp remains unchanged at 480 hp throughout even with overboost. Overboost only affects the torque which goes up from 457 tq to 502 tq for 10 secs at a time as indicated by the "up arrow" when sport mode is activated.

Does anybody else find that gimmick to be extremely goofy and unbecoming of a Porsche? I mean, what happens when you're on the track? You get 10 seconds of overboost, then it goes back to normal in the middle of the back straight - then it catches its breath again, and gives you 10 more seconds? What good is inconsistent power delivery?

That's exactly why this car needs to be chipped. The ecu tune will get rid of the stupid 10 sec rule or the rpm range rule and gives overboost across the whole rpm range starting as low as 2000 rpm and maintaining boost all the way up.
this happens in both standard and sport mode, but with more power in sport mode.
without the chip, the car comes alive for a while and then dies again, very frustrating if you ask me.
ecu tuning is the best mod the 997 TT can have, period.
