Fabspeed Installed - Initial Comments
All,
Thought I would post my initial thoughts on Fabspeed muffler and cats for anyone who is considering an aftermarket exhaust.
System: Fabspeed muffler and cats. Fabspeed offers three levels of loudness (not including straight pipes). I opted for the “medium” loudness. According to Stephen at Imagine Auto, most people choose the “quiet” version.
Imagine Auto: Purchased the system from Stephen at Imagine Auto. He posts frequently here. Working with him and his team was great. All was as represented. The fact that Stephen has this system on his own TT was a factor in my selection.
Install: I had my local guy here in Nashville do the work. This mechanic is recognized as the guy to take high end cars to in the area. He does all the Ferrari work ever since the local F-car dealership closed down. He had done work on my 355 and 360 so I had confidence. I think I paid for a bit of learning curve – I think the job should have taken about 4 hours but it took him 6. He said that the old exhaust was extremely hard to remove but that the Fabspeed system lined up perfectly. He was very complimentary of the build quality of the Fabspeed. So far, the install seem fine. No rattles, etc. Tips aren’t quite lined up right so I will need to make a return trip sometime soon for an adjustment. I should have noticed this when I picked it up.
Sound: I had an AWE system on my 997S so I have some experience with Porsche exhaust alternatives. I liked the sound of the AWE system but chose Fabspeed this time. I’m not going to compare since the cars are different. I’m sure an AWE for a TT is not the same as it is for 997S. The Fabspeed system is loud. The sound is deep, cold start is relatively aggressive, and it is very loud under throttle. Even with the windows closed, the system is very loud.
General: I really like the sound. I think my taste tends to be for louder systems than most people. This is right at the edge of what I would want. That said, I wouldn’t want it significantly quieter either. I don’t use the TT for long highway drives but I could see the noise level on this getting annoying for many passengers.
Net/net: I like it but I think the “medium” loudness level is not for the faint of heart.

I guess my setup would be what...2 notc hes down from the loudest? Loudest being cat&muffler bypass pipes then muffler bypass then my setup?
Anyways, like Tim said there is an aggressive idle noise which can't really be described but 'awesome' All I know is that whenever I start her up everyone gets the biggest dumb grin on their face!
At lowrevs like putting around parking lots or pulling into my garage there's a real nice low bass note that you can hear from inside the house. Not loud, just a deep bass.
At highway cruising there is nothing to worry about but when you do drop the hammer......ohhhhhh yeah
I love the setup and it definitely gave the car some more power. I have to go back to quality again because the finish is so nice. I'd like to mount the headers on a wall!
There's my $0.02

I totally agree. Quality is amazing. Cold start generates silly grin!
I believe there are three sound level plus straight pipes. I spoke at length with Stephen at Imagine on this topic. Medium has a fair amount of drone inside the car at cruising speed with windows up. Some may not like this. I do.

Wow that's wierd. I got a completely different impression from Stephen at Imagine Auto. Stephen indicated it was all about the baffles in the muffler itself - not the components used.

Joe or Stephen please clarify this...
Quick edit- I found this in another post from FS•
"Fabspeed 996TT and 997TT exhaust systems are modular and adjustable in sound and power levels via F1/Aerospace quality V band clamps. These MIL spec clamps also make installation of our systems the easiest in the world. You can change the sound and power level of a Fabspeed 997TT exhaust system in less than 20 minutes. In terms of our Maxflo mufflers alone, we offer two slightly different systems creating moderate to more aggressive sound. From these two starting points you can add more increased sound levels through the quick installation of our sport race cats or louder cat-bypass pipes. All of these pieces within our system are modular and interchangeable through the use of our military spec v-band clamps."
So there appear to be two different mufflers, this is good news for me as I could not tolerate any droning.

Stephen is correct....we have different cans available to quiet the system down more for tiptronic cars. The Maxflow muffler with 200 cell race cats has an aggressive sound, but it sounds amazing. For folks who want it a litte bit quieter use the same race cats but incorporate a different muffler.
Hope I answered your question.
