997 Turbo MK1 "Rattle, Ticking" Engine, help :o
Hello,
i am from Germany and i´ve found this nice forum over google and youtube. I am the owner of a Porsche 997 Turbo MK1 with 480hp and a mileage of 76.000km with manual transmission.
The car is completely stock, only fitted with an Oehlins road and track suspension.
If the oil is warm, i get some rattling/ ticking noise at idle, if the oil ist cold, the noise doesn´t exist.
The noise exists for 500km now, but haven´t become louder since it came up. If i rev up over idle, i cannot recorgnize the noise, maybe it´s gone or i cannot hear it anymore, because of the engine itselfs gets louder.
Pressing the clutch causes no changes of the noise.
I´ve uploaded a short video on youtube, just click the link below.

Sounds pretty normal to me, Maurice. These are chatty engines, they have a lot of moving parts to make noise.

This loud ticking?
Do you drive also an Porsche Turbo with this noise and no problems?
I know that on BMW M engines is this not normal, but i dont have experience on Porsche Engines.
Thank you much.

Really?
Is it normal that the "ticking" comes only if the engine (oil) is warm?
Okay i tought anything is defekt, i know that from BMW M Engines, they are loud too, but no ticking or so.
I dont have experience from the porsche engines.

Okay, so it is really normal, that the engine do the noises only if the oil is warm?

Much Thanks to all.

It is normal with the Mezger motor. Clicking, ticking, tapping at idle. In fact standing at pit out at the track as cars come in from hot laps, even 991 GT3s and RS's sound like buckets of rocks as they idle into the paddock. Standard Porsche motorsport noises.
There is that some oils / weights will reduce or eliminate the chatter. But the chatter is normal - part of the ownership experience of the GT1-derived engine

Totally normal... I hope lol, since my car has sounded the same as yours ever since I bought it in 2016 with 16k miles. Listened twice to your video.
Ive brought it to two dealers and 3 times to the same Indy shop. 11k miles later it sounds like that only when engine oil is hot. I run MOTUL 8100 5W40 and it MIGHT have helped but once engine oil is hot she sounds just like yours and its annoying as hell.
Edit: oh btw, initially it sounded like a dual mass flywheel failing to me, YouTube that, but at the end folks tell me its the Mezger sound.

How is your oil pressure at idle? Does it max out when you rev the engine? If oil pressure is fine (couldn't tell from your video) then the noise sounds totally normal from what I can tell.
If you are still worried about the noise, change the oil and see if the fresh oil makes the 'knocking' sound significantly less or if it makes it go away. If it does NOT make any difference to the noise and the oil pressure is still good, then I would say that you have nothing to worry about.

Hallo Maurice91,

Hier mein Facebook link:

Translation
A 'rough' translation from Google translator to the post above:=leftI have the Rattle noise at my 997 Turbo Mj08 at the time 74500Km and have already done a lot of research.
We had a Porsche meeting in Böblingen organized by PFF with about 700 vehicles. I was there early and listened at the entrance to the 996 and 997 Mezgermotoren. Everyone is making the Rattle sound. The turbos a little more clearly than the GT3, but can also lie on the louder exhaust of the GT3.
Hans Mezger was personally on site for interviews. I asked him about the noise. He confirmed that the engines were louder mechanically when warm, but could not (or did not) tell me where it came from.
Then I asked a retired master of the factory repair in Zuffenhausen. He recalled a case where a customer has objected to a new car that massively. The engine was disassembled and diagnosed without finding a fault. One has then renewed the intermediate wave and the noise was gone. Coincidence?
I have my own theory about the noise.
The engine has a total of 9 oil pumps. 3 of them have every mezgermotor, including the air-cooled. 6, however, there are only in the turbos and 4 in the GT3. These pumps evacuate the NW housing and turbos. These pumps are straight-toothed and run without back pressure, i.e., at low speeds and with little oil delivery, the flanks of the straight-toothed pump blades could tend to rattle. At speeds above 1800 rpm, the noise is gone. then the engine runs more homogeneous and the amount of oil to be pumped is greater and dampens the noise.
That's why I switched to Castrol 10W60. The noise has only become marginally quieter.
Then I suspected the rear suspension of the engine mount to be like a loudspeaker due to the large area. I covered the sword with an aluminum laminated thermal insulation foil and that actually reduced the noise by about 30%.
I have made my peace with it now, the Rattle is one of the water-cooled Mezgermotoren easy to do, you do not have to worry because it is harmless.
