Default A/C compressor problem

Took my 2011 GT3 in to the dealership for oil change and to diagnose the a/c not blowing cold. They tell me that the clutch is gone from the compressor...anybody ever heard of this? As far as I know it had never been touched. Apparently it just fell off. They can't get just the clutch...needs a whole new compressor. Anybody done an a/c delete want to sell one?

Thanks Spyerx. Any idea why would they tell me the clutch alone is not available?
Have you ever seen one just fall off?

clutch can't 'leave' the compressor assembly without some massive damage to the engine bay, and no belt-drive to the other accessories(Waterpump,Alternator, power steering) , what they likely mean is the clutch is worn-out

Ask the dealership what was the pressure in the system after the clutch ran away.

thanks...even if he just meant it's "worn out" instead of physically gone they sure don't want me to know the clutch itself is available. Bummer the car only has 28,000 mi.

I don't understand what you mean? Are you implying they broke it?

Many dealers only replace subassemblies due to warranty and labor hour issues.

if it were me in my garage, I would investigate, tinker around, figure things out then replace only what is necessary, taking days to do this. that is my luxury.
The dealer needs to be efficient, in and out ASAP with the lowest liability on a repair. My guess is that swapping the whole subsystem (compressor + clutch) accomplishes his goals and assures him that you'll have a great operating unit that won't have to return due to issues.

Yep, I will guess for a dealer replacing the whole unit is an easier job. Evacuate system, unbolt compressor, replace, run fill cycle on ac machine, done. 6 or so bolts and an hour of the machine doing its thing.

Picked the car up from the dealership today. They say the clutch is no longer there. I asked them twice to be sure I heard them correctly. Nobody knows how it could come off w/o damaging something but there's no sign of anything going wrong except it's not there.

The compressor clutch assembly consists of a coil held onto the compressor nose assembly with a lock ring. Then the pulley slips over it and its bearing's (pressed into the pulley) inner race is a slip fit on the nose and it too is held on with lock ring. Then the outer clutch hub fits on the compressor shaft and it is held on with lock washer and a nut. You need an air gun to take off the nut.

In order for the complete clutch assembly to "fall off, gone missing" you need a few tools.

So, whom work on the car after the last time the AC was working ?

Time for you to call Inspector Clouseau !

not to mention if the clutch/pulley is 'gone', you have no power steering, A/C, alternator...
