The concept of the "emotional driving experience" is a good one. The GT4 works so well because it is both fun and most capable. A lighter, simpler / more nimble track focused 911 would be awesome. So, here are my suggested ingredients for Porsche's - manual / louder (less interior deadening) / GT3 wide body / manual windows / No nav / no rear wheel steering / removable 2 part front splitter (easily convert from street to track) / 3.8 engine w power kit - (speed comes from lightweight and drivers ability not max hp).

good stuff.
now, the name plate has no more meaning than Honda.

a power brand doesn't make 80 variants.
they work work work and put all they got into one, u like it, buy it. u don't like it, leave. when a brand starts to hedge, and trying out expand by including everyone, it is just a business, not a brand anymore.

rennsport reunion 20 would not feel the same

So.. 911R.. Its like a GT4 but in a 911 body +100HP and 3x the price still slower than an RS and you need a 918 to get one.
Got it.

If you take away all the driver aids, areo, lighten the car, take away some of the mechanical grip (less tire) and keep the same power output, add manual gearbox and stir; I for one think you get a fun drivers experience. Maybe not the fastest lap time. This could be more about improving driver skills and grin quotient than about lap time and bragging rights.
And if the factory make money doing it, good for them and good for those who get it.
Just one old farts thoughts on old school.

Fun.

Narrower tires work at a wider slip angle. Wider slip angle means more adjustability- easier to play on and over the line. Focus on fun using modern tech, it could be unbelievable. I totally get it. Or rather would if they were gettable.

Black series is the new AMG.
AMG diluted and destroyed with AMG sport.

What does BMW have?
CSL or whatever this new M4 is is the new M.
M diluted and destroyed with M sport.

Audi as at least still RS - S - Sline but well, they're audi's..

Porsche has not much left either. Black edition, really?!
Maybe the new line should be called RL for renn lightweight or somesuch.
But it needs to be cheaper it needs to be the be RSAmerica.

then why not just buy a 911 3.0, 3.2, 964?
that's what i just did.

i think it was matt m of guards gears told me, dont buy an old car that drives like a modern car or a modern car that drives like an old car.

I have ZERO interest in the 991 R or whatever they want to call it. Let the 918 owners fight to the death over it. No aero + no wide body = Trojan no care!

I struggle to think what Porsche's becoming. Not like the volume's helping the brand either--dealer organizations in many markets can't cope with the volumes from new mass-market products. Do we really need another "special edition" product?

What's so bloody wrong with charging 25% extra on the price tag and selling 20% lower volumes? Take my money on that trade and it'll be a win-win for everyone down the road...

Exactly! The RSA was $10K less expensive than a base 964 C2 and was great value for money at the time. I had two of them, wish I had kept the white one without the sunroof.

This thread got me thinking (which can be dangerous)....

If the 911R comes in at or above the MSRP of a base 991S, - which it likely will - aside from owning the "latest, greatest 911", wouldn't buying a clean, low mileage 997.1 GT3 be a more intelligent choice for many thousands fewer dineros? After all, even a plain ol' 997 GT3 is the real deal even if it doesn't have that coveted "R" graphic on the rear.

Back to normal thinking now.
