Crystal ball time.

If you had some extra cash to buy a spare fun car with the goal of possible appreciation over the next 5+ years what would you buy?

I've been thinking about a 993 coupe or 84-89 carrera.

Any of the aircooled 911s. If you can get in for $60. Expect higher mileage and some DIY projects.

I guess I haven't been in touch with the current prices. I figured a good g50 carrera was still easily attainable and that 993s were slowing down.

The 993 market is white hot. Maybe you can get into a narrow body with high miles for $60.

Maybe a 996 GT3 or a 996 Turbo that's all stock. Depreciation might still be an issue unless you can buy really smart.

is this porsche only or can you go outside the brand?

Porsche: for me 996 GT3
Japanese: Clean Toyota Supra 6 Speed, NSX has already gone up, but if you can find a deal great, S2000 CR in good condition
Euro: I want one of those Alfa GTV 16V, E30 M3 (although those are nuts now), Ferrari 308 (they are starting to uptick)

Sounds like I missed the boat on a 993.

I like your examples. A nice NSX would be a great choice. Did they sky rocket like the 993 too? E30 m3 would be cool too.

What hasn't taken off yet?

Second a 993.

You haven't missed the boat. A nice 993 coupe with ~100k miles is still a $42k to $45k car...at least that is what I think mine is valued at (I watch the market but will never sell mine). $50k would get you a really nice one. Once you get into widebodies and Turbos the price goes up exponentially.

I've always said that if something happened to my 993 I'd replace with an NSX or E30 M3, so those are good suggestions as well and likely to keep appreciating.

996 gt3
964 c2
85+ Carrera

All can be had in that price range. 993 doesn't do it for me.

For fun, 996gt3

To make money. Not a car. To risky.

Oh that investment thing. Not a car :-) you are winning if it holds value and you break even after maintenance, gas, insurance, etc. but a "safer" place to park $ for a car would be one of these I think. But not as an investment. Investment/collector grade examples will be well above that range.

I agree. Break even would be great and more than I realistically expect.

However, if I could get paid to drive one of these great cars during my ownership, that would be fantastic!

If we are resorting to buying car as investment, IMO, you lads need better accountants.
Someone should also tell Mooty to stop driving his 4.0.
Entityx, should beat down that lady who DD's her Enzo as well.

Sorry i just hate these threads about car's as "investments". If you calculate ROI, very rarely do any of these turn into a profit margin. Unless you flip within days/weeks- if bought under priced. Or just at the perfect time before a bubble, and sell before a burst.
Unfortunately we are currently in the bubble phase.
