Default Been trying to explain 964 to us 997 GT3 guys.

I bought my 964RSAmerica Racecar late 2013 I think and it seemed a nice way to go racing but I expected not much of it..
First day at Sebring, after 3 laps I think to myself "Crap they didn't do much in 20 years besides give it some more power". This things awesome!

Loved the smaller footprint, instantly super comfy in the car, same brake points, same shift points, same everything as a .2RS just at 9/10th pace so I was nice and comfy in the car except it shifts nicer. Just such a sweetheart of a car.

It cords all 4 tires pretty much the same session, balance is great, but it really uses the big 3.8RS rear wing downforce on the track, I don't love the look of my wing and mine is just black not Raspberry, but I'd say a 964RS will get light at speed.

My car is a little racier than the car in the article below, but not by much and very close in spec and the article it explains it brilliantly. I can image new GT3 track guys like myself (since '08) that never drive these cars new to dismiss these old cars as I did, so pretty cool and wanted to share!

I raced my car a couple of times and probably put 50 track days on it since I bought it and it never really broke anything other than an oil line or wheel bearing. So solid as well!
The 964 turned out to be classed all wrong to be raced in PCA and I bought a '83 SC to race PCA Eclass but I left the 964 PCA race legal, left fuel cell, cage, halo seats and all the go fast stuff, just added AC, interior, quiet exhaust ( to pass Laguna Sega but sounds so nice and quiet I left it) because it just drives so damn nice on the street and on the track!

Until the RS arrives it will share daily driving duties with my 93 500E, (another surprisingly great car BTW) and I will still do local track days with it when there is too much down time between PCA races :-)

Look forward to getting it back next week after the interior is done and take it to Sebring ASAP:-)

I loved my RSA ... probably the one car (along with the 996.1 GT3) that taught me the most, and was the most rewarding when driven well ...




(note I restored the whaletail after I bought the car...)

I owned a 94 RS America for 8+ years.
Bought it brand new, car is now in NC with ~10k on it.

Do I miss it ?? NFW
without a doubt the worst handling 911 I've owned (from 72 S to '15 GT3)

964's are ok but something special ? not so sure
When new the old 911 guys hated them....coil springs, power steering, optional 4WD..not a "Real" 911 to them.

964's are the best 911's for oil leaks and understeer...everything else ? not so much
Would MUCH rather have a long hood "S" or 993, 997 RS, 991 GT3......

I owned two 1993 RSA's back in the 90's. One black, one white.

They were fun street cars, both mine were unmodified except for H&R lowering springs, but for some unexplained reason the white one was noticeably quicker and had sharper handling. It is one of the two Porsches of the 22 I've owned since 1972 that I really wish I had kept.

The 964 series was the first 911 iteration that was designed to incorporate "real" air conditioning, unlike the longhoods, midyears, SC's, and the '84-89 Carreras. Also, both my RSA's felt quicker than the Varioram 993 I had which had way too-tall gearing, thanks to the EPA. It was a gorgeous car but I never bonded with it. Even with the updated rear suspension on the 993, the 964 had better road feel.

Apologies to the 993 owners out there but I think the US versions of those cars are overrated from a driving standpoint. I'll take a 5-speed 964 any day over a 993.

Back to the 964 RSA - don't let the "RS" in the name fool you. The RoW 964 RS was a bonafide RS. The RSA was essentially a decontented 964 C2 with a MSRP $10K less than the C2. The deletions included power steering, rear seats on the '93 version, the radio and the sunroof and A/C, the latter two which were options. The additions were M030 sport suspension (at the silly USA 4X4 ride height...) nice cloth sports seat and 17" Cup I wheels.

The slightly lower weight and the manual steering did make for a slightly more involving driving experience. It was a relative bargain at the time with a base MSRP around $54K. Now I see used ones for sale at $100K+ asking prices when 997.1 GT3's with 40K miles are on the market at $20K+ less. That's 415 HP vs 247, not to mention the 964's relatively archaic suspension, etc, etc.

Somehow, and having owned both, that just defies logic, IMO.
