No, for that you need a 4.0! so now we have it narrowed down to gt2 for Monday- Wednesday. Thursday-Friday means gt3s and weekend 4.0! sounds like a good week to me....

Guys, this conversation appears to cover the 997 GT2. What are our collective thoughts on the 996 GT2?

If I had money I would have both, but I chose a GT3 RS since I've always had turbo cars and wanted something different. I don't regret getting the RS. I went back and forth for a long time, but never got to drive a GT2 since they are so hard to find. Wish someone in SoCal would trade cars with me for a day. The RS sounds great, but a good exhaust can really wake up a GT2. See link.. car sounds awesome at full chat.

Nick is right. His GT2 can indeed hit 170 at RA. I've seen his tail lights disappear going up the front straight when I was driving my 996 GT3RS (factory racecar) which tops out at 160 at the same place. That said, his is no stock GT2. My guess is it makes at least 600 hp, while my car makes 500. I'm sure he can tell us.

They are all great cars! Personally I have a lot more seat time in gt3s than gt2s! Had a modded 6gt2 for a couple of weeks and it felt like it wanted to kill me every day. I've always had trouble with the turbo lag. But well driven, both 6gt2 and 7gt2 are great cars!

My 7GT2 went to E. Europe earlier this year. And another 7GT2 left for Europe this week. That's 2 fewer cars here...fwiw...

Comparisons with 996s are tougher. Although great cars in their own right, it's hard for me to get back in one and really desire it after owning a 997.2.

I really loved my old 996TT, lusted after 996 GT2s all day long, but I doubt I'd buy one at this point, meaning I really appreciate the 997 improvements and would only want a 997TT or 997 GT2 if I wanted to buy another turbocharged 911. Just my thoughts on the matter.

tough call 996 vs 997...
IMO, like 996 for it's purity and simplicity, 997 is nice for revised suspension geometry and tire sizes.
Bunch of items to go back and forth/pros-cons on....nearly identical performance, but with more refinement in 997.
Wouldn't trade 996 for 997 unless values were virtually equal...ultimately is a personal preference thing.

No, haven't been in a while, we relocated down south to escape IL and the ridiculous winters after 20+ years of deteriorating downtown city life.

You may have been able to keep up for a number of reasons. Perhaps the owner didn't want to push the car. Perhaps the owner wasn't comfortable at those speeds. I know I wasn't at first, with the GT2 being my first Porsche, even with countless track hours behind the wheel of about two dozen cars of various makes. Or maybe you are Pat Long and can push your car beyond the normal parameters.

I haven't had much interest in track days in the last seven or eight years or so. I go for the social aspect but that's about it, helping friends get started in the trackday hobby etc. I get far more out, for the effort, racing karts, and I have zero interest getting back into a race car/race car costs.

Both great cars! I have a gen2 GT3RS. I have driven and almost purchased a GT2RS. Just unbelievable! I regret not adding the GT2RS when I was offered it but all in all my GR3RS is just a special car. Only approximately 1600 gen 2 cars worldwide. You can't go wrong either way. I also have a 2010 turbo which gives me a very different experience from my GT3RS. If I could have one of every 911 I would be very very happy!

Both are great cars...some prefer torque, some revs.....
But 2 things the GT2 will never have.....throttle response & sound. And no amount of "tuning" or aftermarket exhaust can fix that.......

I bought my GT2 (my first Porsche) in February and have tracked it about a dozen times since then. The first weekend I had it (at Summit Point's Main Circuit) I was very cautious with it, as I've never driven a turbo car before, and I had quite a time learning how to handle its kick, making sure that it would only spool up when the front wheels were pointing straight. I am amazed at how powerful it is in a straight line.

The car is still 100% stock (and currently wearing Pilot Sports) and I love it. Lots of my track buddies have offered to buy it, but my answer is always the same: you can have it when you can pry its steering wheel from my cold dead Rigor-mortised hands.

To the original poster: my advice is to keep The Deuce and get the GT3RS. They are very different automobiles. I have a 991 GT3 on order for 2016 (might get an RS if out by then) but without question I will be keeping the GT2.

Agh! Yes! the sound of my GT3RS is in a different league and the more miles I put on it the better it sounds.

having owned a 996tt i can tell you having a car with boost will get you out of bed. the insanity of the power would always make my laugh with my mildly tuned 996tt
