Yeah, get a real truck that can tow a 2-car open trailer then I can pay you to tow Violet around the So Cal tracks.

Struggled with same dilemma. 3/4 ton truck is obviously the better vehicle, but would sit idle for too much time. I opted for used Nissan Armada - 9k tow capacity and works great as family SUV. Nissan ain't sexy but tows my 7500lb closed trailer well. Has tranny temp gauge, so you know what's going on down there.

Still, one day the GMC 2500 or full motor home will be necessary

montoya knows truth. you can tow what ever with whateveer. i towed 36' with pepper gtS before... just go 10mph. and if here's a hill, make an U turn.

and montoya... try a gooseneck, you will never tow off bumper again even if i get a 18' trailer it will be a goose neck ;-)

but what do i know. i only had 7 trailers in 4 years.

hoopumpers, get a very high end crew cab short bed. it's like an SUV. my cabin is IDENTICAL to suburban. make it a DD. i drive the damn thing (3500 dually) in and out of financial district in SF EVERYDAY. i also park it indoors in the City. you learn how to move the truck around. i only scraped wall and destroyed mirror once over 120,000 miles. total damage cost - 1800$. not bad.

if you have boys, they will love it. they love the truck, washes it and can't be bothered with my various RS in the garage ;-(

the 3500 dually should be out in a month if not already

He has no complaints but I'm still with you, active suspension is on the list for whatever I get. That's the main reason I decided not to make Mike an offer on his and decided to keep looking for one with the air suspension.

Ok, so you're insane driving a 3500 in the city....

but, "very high end crew cab short bed... which are on your short lists? Since I'm shopping I might as well take a look. The biggest question for me is if I could tolerate as a DD. Uncle has an Armada, its nice, he tows a decent sized boat with it and likes, he's had a few tranny issues though...

==> i used to be afraid. but.. if you are stuck, tons of ppl will help you get out. if you just wiggle, ppl move out of your way. if they dont, rub them, it's really cheap to fix trucks. i only yield to 18 wheelers.

==> GMC sierra denali or SLT, chevy has denali equivelant or LTZ, ford has king ranch.

The biggest question for me is if I could tolerate as a DD.
==> most ppl can't. do this test, truck is bumpier than cars. try to drink coffee, while blue toothing and changing radio station at the same time all while your changing line. if you can do it, then it's all good.

Uncle has an Armada, its nice, he tows a decent sized boat with it and likes, he's had a few tranny issues though
==> seriously, you can tow with x5 using open trailer. just lease the car, the tranny WILL DIE. pray it dies after your lease expires. you might overheat on grapevine or giong up the hill at LS. even duramax can barely make up that hill.

I have no space for a 50ft trailer and a dually! :-) Is this doable?
I put 20k on my wife's X5d towing that same setup with a tire rack and tool box. Towed like a dream and got 14.2mpg.

46' Gooseneck will be delivered mid April. You have to go Gooseneck. I'm borrowing a nice new aluminum 28' tag trailer and it sucks towing. In April Dodge starts building the new 3500 with rear air suspension, replacing the 11 Diesel megacab.

Megacab has 6' bed huge rear seat room. Plus I like low RPM Cummins torque and it is the only dually that fits in the garage.

Oh and wake the dead authoring and aux diesel tank are musts.

I don't have a long enough driveway for a 2-car trailer plus my HOA would be sending me nasty letters about it too.

i towed an open 24' old steel heavy trailer with e36 m3 race car with my 2012 x5d. towed like a dream. i towed this set up with a late model f150 and the x5 handled it better. the stiff sporty suspension, big wide wheels, auto leveling suspension, unibody, etc...

now i tow a 24' fully loaded enclosed tpd with my 3500 denali dually. did someone say slippery slope?
