What is the Best Lap Timer Available?
Hi Guys,
I need to buy a decent lap timer. Nothing on the Iphone.....
I prefer data logging that I can connect with a camera and the car's OBD for an RS.2.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Motec here in Aus... plugs into OBD port for access to car's systems, syncs to camera and lots of info... biggish $$$ and they are soon expected to be released without dashboard...
Otherwise Vbox...
US fellas will be able to chime in with US systems they use...

I think they are about $2500-$3000 locally... they were planning to release a non motec dash version which was hopefully going to be less... The dash unit is virtually as you would have had in the cup car champ. Tried one recently at PI, impressed...

Racelogics Vbox is the best. I am looking at getting the vbox lite which can take a clip on can-bus connector for telemetry.

There is no way I would put a motec dash in a new RS.

I think they do not have issues with .2 RS cars ECU but you can check, search racing forum - there were several threads there about this topic.
You do want ECU data in the logger to see your inputs and RPM together with accelerometers data. for camera you get smartycam, it connects tgo Solo unit and this combo works out of the box and does not require any post-processing. AiM software is imho best that is out there. totally worth it.

On the 964 I didn't connect into the car's wiring yet. Running only on the camera and Solo's battery. Takes about 1-2 minutes to install and run the microphone wire.
If you look at my RS videos it works flawlessly, and it's connected thru OBD2, and if you choose to, and wants more information (oil, temp, pressure etc) you can use the CAN BUS.
You can't go wrong with Vbox or Solo. What I like about the Solo better than the Vbox is the in car display, and the way I set my dash, I have the partial lap times on the spot with other information, which allows me to try different things and now if it works or not on the post as it will show the time and +- in the segment.
Very complete data, most likely a lot more than you will be able to use.
Strongly recommended, and the video from Smarty cam is also better than Vbox, and my version is not even the HD, which should be out by now.
