Sold my RS today. Traded it for a soon to be built 14 Cayman S, PDK, PTV, PASM, Sport Chrono blah, blah blah, unless dealer can find a similar optioned car from another dealer.
Absolutely Love/Loved the RS but the thought of continuing to track a $100K plus car, along with the potential C/L issue and associated cost was always in the back of my mind. Drove the RS to dealer this morning...my car is already sold. New buyer to pick up tomorrow...Amazing.
Back to the Cayman. I've been talking to John at BBG and he says I'm not alone in doing this. He has given me some ideas on mods that should make an great weekend warrior street/DE track car, and I've got plenty of spare change from the trade to get started. I have to say that the Cayman is the sportiest car Porsche has to offer right now. Not impressed with the 991 but the new 981 is really crisp and taut. Have to say the PDK with paddles is pretty amazing too.
In any event I'll be lurking, this is still the best forum! Thanks to all for the great information that is shared here.

Congrats...I sort of did that. I think the new Cayman is a great platform. Still- the RS is great. I will be interested in hearing your opinions. I missed my RS too much and had to buy another but I track a Cayman.

Yes seats are a problem. I'll try to get some 2012 seats if possible or maybe go with a Sparco seat. R is nice but I like the look of the 981.

what do you guys see in cayman? it is more expensive to build up than lotus and much more expensive than e46 based racer yet runs about same... i agree bgb or similar based project cars based on cayman r and GTS uptuned 450hp DFI motor are indeed in different category but a standard croc is, well, it is a good car and drives incredibly well but not so special, really, and not so light either.
congrats, nevertheless, by no means i want to doubt your decision, just genuinely curious, that's all.

Well with just basic comfort stuff and all of the performance options I'm at about 71K OTD. I will start incrementally, wheels and tires, good brake fluid, GT3 brake ducts, seats, harnesses and harness bar to start, so say maybe 6to 7 K initially. I should have a good start at a DE car for 77- 78K. Maybe an exhaust after a while. For under 80K I think I'll have a fun DE car that will see 6-8 DE's and a half dozen AutoX's a year and still make for a fun weekend get away car with the wife. Not a daily driver, just a toy but a lot cheaper than 120K+ for the RS and consumables are part of the game anyway.

I can understand the Cayman, nice car. Nicer than 991 but you do have to add power and brakes.
3.8l cayman could be great but still 100k. Too close to 991 with warranty. Try Corvette, maybe try old 911 racing. see how GT3 does, wait for the new RS, in the meanwhile try not to hit wall in 4.0. Got it.
I'm going to need time at the track the coming years.

Last time I was at Sebring with the Cayman (07 3.4), I was running on old R6 255 all around, and 8"/9" wheels, not the best wheel/tire combination, too narrow.
GT3DE and M3EvoBR were the fastest cars, lapping in 2:22s (very hot day) on fresh R6, driving the 450Hp 3.8RS. My lousy Coxtser ran a best of 2:28, 6 secs is plenty of difference, but my Coxster is losing just 2.5 secs per minute to their cars. On good weather, these two GT3 RS have done 2:17-2:18 at Sebring, and my Cayman could be lapping in the 2:24s on that same weather. I can still make it 100 lbs lighter without sacrifices to the street ability, add power on the intake side, run 9"/10" on wider tires, and the car can get down to 2:22s. With a Wing and front splitter, 2:20s is feasible, this is solid GT3 territory. My car is an open-diff car.
We also did back to back testing with a C6 Z06 at a long high speed autoX a few months ago, and the cars are pretty close in performance, less than 1 second apart.
The 09+ Cayman (987.2) is a better chassis, better engine and better transmission car than the 06-08 Cayman. Equal weight, but it got an optional LSD and the 9A1 engine with DFI, this is a strong engine that puts close to 30whp more on a dyno than the 06-08 3.4, and it has almost 996 GT3 torque on the mid-range.
The 13+ Cayman S (981) lost 74 lbs to the 06-12 Cayman S, and they have resolved a problem that plagued the Cayman, understeer, front track was increased significantly, wheelbase was extended, and the new car is setup loose. My friend and former co-driver won an event filmed by SpeedTV "King of the Curve", and he has driven many Boxster/Cayman, including mine, a Boxster Spyder, 2.5/2.7/3.2, his feedback was very revealing.
In the video below I'm playing with the 415 Hp famous BumbleBee, it was on Michelin PSS tires, and that was enough to run his pace or a little faster (his best that day did not get below 2:30). He's a self proclaimed driving expert and Instructor, me a lousy driver allergic to apexes and scared of T1, Bishop Bend, T16 and T17.
