I use 5w50 all the time, when you record oil pressure channel in your aim you can see how it differs from 0w40, it is indeed better for hot days. higher pressure, better lubrication and it is approved by factory, so, I would not even think twice.

The reason pressure is used to observe lubrication is because it's easier to measure than flow. When using a single oil or similar oils it's ok, but 2 different oils can have 2ml of oil flowing per sec. (2ml/s) or 2000ml/s while having the exact same oil pressure (e.g. 3bar), but clearly the latter is not lubricating anything.

It's a little moot when talking about 30, 40, & 50 weight but the point is the pressure reads the exact same and you dont know the actual flow.

40 weight or 50 weight from a good company is ok for hot running temps, but running hot on track the thicker oil is supposed to match normal running viscosity, since weights are standardized you can make reasonable estimates as to the viscoty of the oil.

Speaking of Mobil 1 5W50, I have a new case (6 quarts) that I bought last year before selling my car to help pay for my MBA

If anyone is local to Chicago (Evanston) you can have it for what I paid ($40)

Mahle and Mann filters, (air and oil) are available on ebay. I bought 4 oil filters and 2 air filters for my 2008 997 for $92.14 delivered. They are Mahle brand. Mahle and Mann are both OEM's. Here's the link:

you guys have dry sump systems, you have no loss of pressure so next to no chance of going wrong on the porsche recommended oil unless you do some 11/10th track driving

US castrol has a bad stigma to it, not sure who bottles it but i don't think the formulations are equivalent (euro 0w30 is apparently the same oil) (also castrol TWS is their top tier product, it's a 60 weight but it'll naturally shear to a 50 weight almost immediately and down to a 40 weight if you keep it in longer than 5000miles)

redline i've heard different things performance wise for their gear oils, engine oils i didn't and wouldn't consider them when Lubro Moly offers the oils I'd need whether it be a bmw, porsche or ferrari

Well I did the oil change myself, a couple of weeks ago. It certainly felt good to drain it, take my time, etc.
I had a brand new change when I bought the car in Houston- the 1200 mile drive was after the car was barely broken in, and from New Orleans here it was a good 14 hrs, some high speed prolonged miles, stopped only for gas then dinner. I could have let it go a while longer, but I felt the 5W-50 would be good as summer approached...and the 0W was too thin in my opinion, there's no winter in FL, lol

My motorcycle changes it's oil every time I ride it (2 stroke)

I just got some more Mobil 5W-50, this time at Napa,$8.99/qt
There are some cheaper deals online, and WallhellMart has the 5W-40 TDT for $26/5 qt jug-that's gotta be the cheapest oil change you can get and I might do it the next time. For now I'm sticking to 5W-50, seems like a great choice.
I picked up an oil filter wrench at Advance auto parts for $5.99, 76mm 14 Flutes so I don't have to borrow my friend's any more. They also had the Mann filter, $10 bucks more than the average online deal but cheaper than the dealer. So buying online can be a good deal but sometimes shipping makes it worse

Certainly feels good changing the oil, and though I'm doing short intervals (about 5k miles)
We just did a PCA run to the Everglades, and I was hitting 140 for a large part of the trip- I bet oil takes a beating at these hot temperatures

Any happy 5W-40 TDT users? My only worry would be Porsche approval, I hear they come to your house if you don't stick to the list, lol...

Best,

JB

How about Castrol Edge Professional TWS 10w-60?
Sportec uses this oil in all its vehicles, road and track.
I had it on the last oil change, but it makes the chains rattle for a second on a cold start.

Amazon has a case of Mobil 1 5w-50 for $52 with a $12 rebate. Must buy by 10/31/13 though. Personally, I have been using Pennzoil 5w-40 euro and my last 2 Blackstone reports have been excellent. Its less than $40 for a case if you subscribe.

I'm a happy Rotella T6 5w40 user, very similar to the TDT, can't go wrong with either IMO
Cheers,
Rob

The cheapest source for 5W-50 seems to be
http://thelubricantstore.com/mobil-1-5w50-6x1qt.html

But depending on shipping costs, compare it to a local Napa store which might carry it-
As mentioned, Advance had the right filter wrench, 76mm/14 flutes. I had been searching for the right one and there seemed to be some confusion on other posts.

So what are the odds that another GT3 pulls up to Advance parts while you're there???
