David Tuaty is a driver coach and co-owner of a racing shop that deals in/with BMW's. Also a really nice guy. We see him every time we go to Sebring. Also saw him earlier in the month at Homestead. Always has a stable of BMW's at the track. He could be a great source for a track BMW. (let someone else pay to mod it up then buy at discount).

S2000 is way to twitchy for what Lindsey wants to use it for. Also wouldn't take one on the track without a full cage. I had one as a T3 race car and wasn't impressed.

There are plenty of already track modded E36's for sale. Just go to M3forum.net and peruse there. You don't need some low mileage garage queen.

Everybody all does the same things. TCK coilovers, polybushings, rollbar, etc. etc. Perfect for track days. They can be found for 10-15K all day long.

I still run my M3 with my BMWCCA buds, I'll put out a feeler if anything is available in the Ohio Valley area.

Hahaha! Dunno. Not really planning to sell it, considering I recently did some age/use related engine repairs. But you never know. I have long considered either a 6 Cup or a Spec 996, but doubt I'd have time to race it much, what with my coaching schedule, and the Cup would be massive overkill for the few DE's I instruct at each year.

I recently took a huge chunk of time out of my personal best at TWS in the M3 by making a small suspenion change, so I am still happy with it.

VR, only if it's retrofitted with 997.2 CL's

Thanks everybody for all suggestions.

At this point I should say my total budget is about 10K. Another reason for wanting the M3 is that I can hopefully get one for about the same price as a 15 event pack of track insurance for the GT3. So, I'm trying to keep the entry price near what that pack of insurance would have been. Once I get it, an event will cost me less than half of what I spend for an event with the GT3. So, I will get to do lot more events for the same or less bottom line outlay and get the experience I need.

I have found a 1999 with 120,000 mi. for $7500. A friend/E36 owner close to it is going to look at it for me tomorrow. If PPI shows nothing major, maybe I'll buy it, replace belts, hoses, bushings, buy some nice seats(which I don't mind sinking some money into since they can ultimately replace the sport buckets currently in the GT3), put a half cage in it, and go to the track.

I talked to David Tuaty for quite a while today. He is a nice guy and gave me some good info. Thanks David.

Western cars are going to be over budget due to transport. I am willing to make an all day drive to get one but that's as far as I can go.

Tom, the 964 would be awesome. I have always wanted an air-cooled car especially a 964. I'm guessing it would be way over my budget though.

Do y'all think my plan is realistic and makes sense?

It will be hard coming from a GT3.
You already have great steering feel, great brakes etc....

To step down to a "beater" will have its merits however i too thought about it but i alas i figured might as well learn in the latest greatest Just gotta be really careful!

If you budget allows, E46 is a much better car and engine to beat on. Slightly higher operating costs w/ rubber etc.
next round will be E46 for me.
