RS 4.0 at the track
#17
that's me. yah i know no helmet. just gotten used to it when we go on the track since there's really very few cars on the track and it's quite wide and open. and besides, this was a leisurely drive and not trying to set any records whatsoever. first time to drive a GT3 or any 911 on the track. the car makes it so easy to make such a good lap time without even trying hard.
in my exige S, i sweat and exert so much effort just to control the car and ring in a good lap time... which until now, i'm still 2 seconds slower on R888s than my former STi with Advan Neovas. i don't understand why =) still, i think it served me well and had an easy time clocking a good time in the RS 4.0 on my first crack at it.

No lid, checked.
Wearing shorts, checked.
Sparco gloves, checked.
Yeah, that'll fly.
Now the really important question is this: Was he wearing flip-flops?
Well, at least he didn't grab his A-pillar!

If one is lucky enough to get a ride with a test engineer at the Porsche factory test track you are riding at 9 to 10/10ths and no helmet is required. (At least is wasn't back in the mid 1990's.) I am not supporting one way or another, just pointing out a lot may have to do with liability -- certainly with the clubs here in the USA.
I personally would always were a helmet.

Sorry, but I'm in the group where in a stock street car, I'd rather not have a helmet even on track. I wear a helmet in my ZR1 on track because I have to with the groups I run with, but I think it's a waste. I have a stock seat (with side airbags), front airbag, crumple zones, rollover protection, etc. I'd rather not have that extra weight jerking my head around in an impact and I don't like the reduced headroom from the taller helmet in the event of a rollover.
Just MHO.
