Are R888s that bad?

I have had my car 4 months now and have been to two lapping days and a skills day. The MPSC tires are the originals and about shot.
I tracked an e92 M3 DCT for 5 seasons. I used a couple of sets of R888s on 18" wheels before moving on to NT01s which I loved. I had no real issues with the 888s other than they were loud on the street. What I liked about both these tires is I could just leave them on the as the next event is only a week or two away at most and my commute is less than 5 minutes. And with tread they are not too bad in the rain. I do drive the car daily.
So I am thinking about getting Oz Challenge 18" wheels and R888s and just leaving them. If I outgrow these tires I could put Trofeos on my stock 19" wheels or move to a more aggressive R compound 18" tire. Alternatively I could just put MPSS on my stock wheels and defer the decision until later.
Would appreciate any thoughts as I am not very knowledgeable in this venue.

If you have tracked for 5 seasons then this isn't new to you.
Here is the thing about the r888s and putting them on a 911, when the tire begins to go, you can lose grip quickly and the car can snap on you - snapping in a 911 can end badly.
So, with the above in mind, if you use them, be ready to recognize this loss of grip, you will get a lap or two of warning, but then you have to understand that the car can go flying off the track.
Positives about the tire
- arrive and drive
- kind of work in the wet at full tread
- come up to temp very quickly
- slightly fast than OE tires
Negatives
- not as fast as you want them to be
- they need scrubbed - the release agent pours out of them the first few sessions and it is dangerous
- they heat cycle out and you need to replace them when they do - if you don't you are risking a write-off
Facts
- they have stiff sidewalls and use less camber than you think
- there are two different beliefs about Hot temps (low 30s or 40)

R888 is having some issues with seem splitting on the tread seem. They are not the same 888's that were being produced a few years ago.
Also the heat cycle life is short so every time you drive them to and from work that would be 2 heat cycles for this r compound tire.
I was probably the last guy on these forums to hang on to driving Toyo R888's but no longer will I drive these tires due to the seem splitting issue I and other have noticed.

If OP wants to run 18" wheels, he needs to use:
335-30-18 RA1's rear, and 245-40-18 NT01 front.
Or R888's same size
Or, since he drives to and from the track, perhaps try:
New BFG Rival, 335-30-18 rear and 245-40-18 front. Comes at 7/32nd tread depth new.

888's make good rain tires. That is about all I can say positive about them...

I think they suck! Squirm at full tread, grip barely better than street tires. Better when shaved or worn down but then useless in the wet. Noisy as hell on the road too. There are better choices. They should have stayed with the RA1 - aka Nito

If you are a NB car, I'd run RS3 Hankooks first before R888's. If 18", I love the NT01.

In a similar situation with a new to me 2010 GT3 NB, sourcing the right R-comp tires that have the correct diameter for the (SC, TC, & ABS) to work correctly. I have six seasons of DE/Open Track expereince with a great 996, four years running MPSC's. getting over 40 HC's with predictable grip. I attend
I will be buying 18inch dedicated track wheels, (OZ Racing Challenge) now finding the correct tires is extremely is difficult and limited.. I am not looking for advice as well as the OP..
This summer will be going slow while learning how to track this wonderful new car. My first choice would be NT01, if they came in the correct size. It seems like a 335/30/18 is too wide especially when matched with a 245 front, mostly based on what i read through threads here on Rennlist
IF not the R888, then what????
Thanks
PS: i would rather wait until next year before getting addicted to Hoosiers..
