Default Blue smoke on start-up. CPO ending.

My 07RS has a CPO that is coming to an end in April. I purchased the car in August last year with 7k on the clock. The PO didn't drive it much so when I first purchased it the smoke at start up I thought was due to lack of driving and I know these engines have a tendancy to burn some oil. I drive the car a good bit (about to turn 9k) and if the car sits for more than a couple days then I still get a good bit of blue smoke upon start up. Is this a sign that the RMS may need replaced?
Also I've read threads in the past where I may have a bit of a fight on my hands w/ a dealer and having this work done under warranty?

Lastly, any last items to have checked on the car since the CPO is close to expiring?

TIA

Dave, they all smoke after sitting

If RMS is bad you will know it by looking under car

Normal to smoke after sitting. Sometimes enough to keep the mosquitos away. RMS wont lead to smoking just leaking underneath leaks.

My 996 4.0 smoked, my 997.2 3.8 also smokes.

Some exceptionally tight engines never smoke, ever, under any conditions, no matter how long they sit. My 996 3.6 was like that. This is the exception, not the norm. You have three rings on the Porsche Mahle pistons with a typical 120 degree spacing of ring openings. It's not preferable to have an opening close to the bottom of the cylinder, but since pistons are a major PITA to install on the watercooled Mezgers, it happens.

My 4.0 smokes and all 3.8 smoked. But if you drive the last 5 minutes under 2K RPM it almost never does.

There is only one way to get to my house, East Delray and it's about 5 minutes of small roads 30-25MPH with kids playing in the middle of the street.

Still if i run it hard and dont baby it the last 5 minutes and let it sit for more than a day it will blow smoke. If I start the car and just move it for a couple of seconds it will blow smoke as well on the next startup.

If it never blows smoke, they sold you a fake.

I have a different perspective and will respond only because I had a specific experience on the topic. About a year ago I was looking at a 997.1 GT3 in the Chicago area .. offered at an unbelievable low price. I went into non-Porsche dealer unannounced to look and when they started it up, quite a bit of smoke came out. They gave me the name of Porsche dealer a previous looker used to check the car out. The authorized porsche dealer would not release me the records on the car .. said they were the property of the guy that paid to have inspection done. Guy in service at authorized dealer told me smoke in these flat six porsche engines was perfectly normal. I then called a salesman at the front of the dealership who it turns out actually knew the history on the car. He said run from the car as fast as you can. Personally, I don't think an authorized dealer is going to help you out much in determining if there is actually a problem without you putting all the energy you have into it. But if I were you I would certainly make the effort and get a print out of the service call in case engine goes bad after warranty runs out.

Also, I currently own a 2011 GT3, and previously owned a 2009 997.2 S and a 2005 997.1 S. None of my cars have ever smoked after sitting .. so I don't really buy the flat six party line.

Your 2011 GT3 must have a build in China label somewhere.. The other ones dont smoke, no GT3 engine..

Like I said, just my opinion, from my experience. I track all of my cars hard, and have all been 3.8L flat sixes. Granted, only one with a GT3/mezger engine, but I would have to see the scientific reason behind how oil gets into the combustion part of the cylinder to be burnt off. Like I said, I just don't agree with the generalization..go back and read the original post. 007DT writes that if the car sits for a couple days, he gets a "good bit" of blue smoke on starting.

One more thing that definitely can contribute to the smoking that I have found. If you park your car on an incline or slope, oil on the crank side of the piston will seep under the rings. Typical for any boxer engine. You only need a very small amount (couple drops I would guess) and you will get smoke. My 1982 did this as well as my GT3. Usually only if parked on a slope. Normal IMHO
