Watched a video on the 2012 GT500 with 662 HP, and I thought to myself, other than it being heavier, could the GT500 eat the GT3/GT2/RS for breakfast? I think it might, but that's just me!

With a good enough driver, on a track with enough straights, without a doubt it will likely eat the 997.1/RS and give a .2 GT3/RS driver a hard time. Mustangs are no longer no handling pony cars. They have their quirks, but can still get the job done.

the gt500 is IMPRESSIVE power for the money
I saw one at homestead last weekend it was fast
If only they had independent suspension in the rear then the drive on bad road would be...safe

the gt500 owner I talk to told me he would also buy a boss302 if he had to do road racing. He bought it for drag racing and daily drvign duties more then the track, but still I think at that price, hard to resist the additional power...and all that under warranty !
ALSO this is certainly the LAST year of the retro style mustang as we know it
next year the mustang will be a worldwide product will completely new design and independent suspensions

For the track so far I don't see any substitute to the Porsche...
GT500 - monster power but heavy
Z06 - lack the feel
Boss302 - lack nimbleness
miata - lack power
s2000 - lack power
bmw 135 - too heavy
bmw m3 - same cost as 911 but power and feel is there. lack torque for dd
Those are the usual suspects.
The GT3, with their reliability and feel factor would be the best if they were not that expensive to begin with![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Let's ask porsche to do another set of 996 gt3 for the year 2014, keep the old tech, and sell them at $65k brand new I think they would have a killer car

I had a 2009 GT500. 2013 model is much improved. Dedicated track car? No. But, makes a great street car. With 662 hp Traction will be a problem. But it would be fun.

2013 GT500 is a great high hp daily driver for not a whole lot of money. Buy one without stripes and you can park it anywhere. King kong torque. Even to 2010-2012 is full of torque.
Ask to track duty, the weight is too heavy, the supension too soft and the brakes fade out after a couple of laps.
It can be modified to run track with aftermarket parts, but alas it is better suited to the street.
The Boss 302 is better suited for track use, but also requires alot of upgrades to handle multiple laps. Still not great out of the box when compared to a GT3. I wouldnt even bother with a boss to be honest. Too mickey mouse for a serious D.E cup guy.
Remember, the stang is a big, big car.
I have been using a GT500 convertable as my beater since 2007 and it is nice for around town commuting. No stripes. Gets washed once a year etc..
Easy to get in and out, plently of ground clearance and trunk space. Soft suspension. lotsa torque.
I like to think of it as a two door grand marquis with a 6 speed.
For a daily driver a good used 991 or spanken new 2013 GT500 is an interesting decision to make.
But i would never consider it to replace my track day car.
Shelby should have made a run of GT350 street cars based on Boss 302's for road and track use and made a run of GT350R cars for track only like the FR racing body in white program offered by ford.
