Default Can you plug a hoosier?

Picked up a torx bit at Barber a couple weeks ago. Clearly must have driven on track with it in there. Didn't even know it was punctured till I went to have them flipped this week and the tire was empty.

How I got a 1/4" torx bit in there is beyond me. I mean, how do you pick something like that up as it has to be laying flat on the ground when you drive over it. Maybe the greek put it there?

Regardless, it's dead center in the middle of the tread on a reasonably new rear tire. Grrrr...

They put a patch on and it was slowly leaking around the patch. My tire guy suggested one of those plug/patches that you pull through the hole and then there's a patch on the inside.

The hole is big enough where you can see daylight. Am I pushing my luck? Someone volunteered a used hoosier for me if I need it so that is an option as well, I just don't know how many cycles are on that used tire.

If you're lapping in 2:28s, yes plug/patch (the one that has a rubber pipe that goes through the hole) is fine.

I quoted your post, in case you make a mess at the T17 wall, as a friendly reminder to others, just in case.

I personally dispose of track tires with any puncture, too much risk. I don't mess with wheels, I don't mess with tires, I don't mess with brakes.

Patch it right, but I never had a plug come out either.

patch/plug will work fine... right up until about 2 seconds before you hit the wall.

No offense,

but you have a 80k car, and you are worried about a 300 tire?

Stop tracking the car.

Seriously, never ever repair a track tire. Toss it out even if you THINK it might be faulty.

exactly!
paranoia is paramount, here!

the loads on tyres is just too immense to even think about asking a question such as this.

Living on the edge.
I had flats but never due to a patch or plug.
When my tire went flat I did not ball up my car either.

I have done it with no adverse consequence but worried a lot. My theory was that I'd have a slow leak at worst so checked pressures when I came in and went out. This is not legal advice and you should rely at your own risk.

Dog...you're a big time baller....buy a new tire.

When I had the screw in the middle of my rear MPSC I spoke with lots of people at the track and called a few...even Mark Hicks said use a plug/patch and watch the tire. I met people that day that were tracking on plugged tires and that have raced on plugged tires. Never knew so many people de'd on plug tires. I did this and took it sort of easy that day and everything went fine. But I now have a different rear tire on the car.
