Default Microphone placement tips to avoid wind noise?

I've been playing around with my new Race-Keeper set up (great product, btw) and need some advice for the best spot to place the microphone. The RK has an external mic, and I've got the "dead kitten" (sorry) cover for it, but I'm still getting a huge amount of wind noise. I've tried placing it between the rear seats (I'm in a C2S so I have seats back there) but that, not surprisingly, didn't work at all as it was directly in the airflow through the windows (DE rules-- driver and passenger window open). I then mounted it behind the lip of driver's side rear seat on the rear package shelf, thinking it would be shielded, but this was only marginally better.

Any of you with similar systems found an ideal spot for interior mic placement to maximize exhaust and engine noise and minimize the wind?

No idea, try something like the front footwell. And can I just take the opportunity to say how utterly stupid the open windows rule sounds.?

I clip my cheap $11 amazon.com microphone right behind the rear license plate. There's clipping from excess noise, so you may need to adjust the volume/gain like I did in the first video when I edited. The 2nd video below is non-edited sound, but still sounds good.

I have a remote mic for my sony camcorder under the rear carpet shelf. Picks up all of the good (engine) and none of the bad (wind).

It's easy to pull one side of the shelf up and find a spot for it.

Don't know about interior but I clip the external mic to the rear license plate. Zero wind noise.

From my E30 M3 recently

911Slow...I couldn't agree more about the open window rules for DE's here in the USA. In modern cars with air bags, open windows on the track are very very wrong. Today's cars windows are designed to act as a guide to direct the air bag to the proper placement.

At a recent track event a GT3 smacked a wall activating the air bags and a lot of the air bag blew right out the door windows and NOT providing proper protection as designed.

I discussed this a few years ago at a Porsche Sport Driving School with some of the instructors and a Porsche engineer.

I wish the car clubs that hold track events would open up their minds and look more into this instead of turning the other way on this very important subject.

Run mic cable under carpet to near ecu on back parcel shelf - works well as JJ says and can be left there - no need to worry or re-install like externals.

OT - Our rules are closed windows here but maybe it's your point by system that requires open?

I have the same issue and put it in the center console and still get a tone of wind noise.

Have you tried up under the dash on the passenger's side?

a. make friends with a local Llama, Alpaca, Camel rancher
b. get some wool
c. be nice to one of your elderly female friends/ relatives
d. get old lady to spin the wool and knit a furry woolly wind cover for the mic

simples

(this is what the professionals do)

Resurrecting this thread. Do you have an audio clip with the mic placed as you describe above? Would love to hear it. Thanks!

put the microphone UNDER the seat. You'll get full engine sound and no wind noise.

Oooh! Another option! Thanks. I've placed a mic in nearly ever nook and cranny of my car but somehow didn't consider the underside of my seats. Will do that as soon as I get home.

I appreciate the idea!

Roland has a highly engineered solution. Sounds good:

Requires some serious work: http://www.digitalmee.net/2013/01/21...-installation/
