It was the weirdest manual I think I have ever driven. In every manual I have ever driven, be it a truck or a 69 bug or a 4.0rs, you can feel the cog engagement though the stick. In the 991, there is zero feel in the manual. It felt so disconnected through the gear stick, I would describe it best as a gear selector switch, not a gear stick.

I am also confident some of the PDK electronics are still there because no matter if I was shifting up or down, he car seemed to know and it seemed to be always the perfect gear to be in. After 40 minutes of driving it, it never had a bad shift and 'welcomed' each gear, almost like I didn't really select it.

The only thing I did like was the new lower seating position and the higher center console made the relationship between the steering wheel and gear shift significantly better, with a small reach off the wheel to the stick.

I think my next GT3 will be PDK.
go checkout MJones's observations on the 991S in that forum ... I think the 'ladies' over there are not happy with him!

How much weight would adding the 2 extra cylinders add? Would it be based on the old 908 series? - probably not since it was only 2 valves/cylinder.
The new 9A1 engine was specifically designed to be modular, so it can be built as a Flat-4 (coming in the 981 Turbo), Flat-6 (used from 2009 in the 987, 997 and 991 Carrera), and Flat-8 (new GT3/RS???).

^^^ lol. Took the words out of my mouth.

I agree though. Patrick Long's new GT3 RSR is paddle shift (sequential box), so why not make the new 991 GT3 paddle shift (PDK) as well?

I had no issue with the 'weighting' of the gearshift, light or heavy is fine with me. It's that, you never felt it engage a gear. The lever just reached it limit in travel so you assumed you made the gear change. I think your right 911slow, its the mechanism on top of the PDK where it's being lost. It was enough for me to say, it's not a manual worth it driving to be honest. I had driven and exact same spec PDK a week earlier and was impressed in how engaging the transmission was. The manual just felt like an afterthought.

As to my next GT3, there's always room for one more!

Okay, so it's the electron inter-ruptus that bugs you, I can understand that and now see what you meant in your OP. I dunno, I wasn't bothered by that so much, and was glad to have a clutch pedal, which is where the joy of heel-toe lies for me anyway. Agree that PDK is very, very good now.

Will be interested to see if your perception of the manual 991's gear lever "engagement" is shared by most people, and one more (cunning) nail in the coffin of the manual transmission.

there were tears ... and a lot of running mascara!

there isn't a week that goes by that I am not thankful that international diplomacy is not conducted via e-mail (with the exception of the diplomatic cables & wikileaks ) .. if is was ... we'd all be sitting in the rubble wondering what that big flash and bang just was!

So far I've seen them on Pirelli P-Zero...same tire that came on my lowly Carrera GTS.

I'm not understanding these 20" tires at all...doesn't seem performance driven. Wonder what Porsche will put on the 991GT3 cars?

well they could stick to a 19" wheel, or ask their vendors to make 20" versions ... I doubt that will happen somehow given the age of the MPSC+ and the Corsa Systems within their respective product lifecycles ... but you never know ...

the list of questionmarks about this model grows longer by the day ...

I'm glad I have one of the last of the real GT3's

I know it's a fun pastime but I think you guys need to stop fretting so much about the feel of the 991S and wait for the new GT3 or RS.
