What is this - the spring?

I have never seen wear different from one side of the car to the other. But you do get two excessive wear patterns: 1) tapering and 2) one side of rotor more than the other. So reverse/flip on each rotor. Especially the front.

*** if you run on track with the nanny then you will get more rear pad wear. Run without the nanny and the rears will last 2x or more longer than the fronts.

Thanks for the advice. New pads have been ordered and shipped. FWIW, Isringhausen sells their PCCB pads for even less than Suncoast.
No move on same caliper...insdie pad to outside pad on same caliper.

tension springy thing under the bolt holding the pads in place. this "spring" makes it very hard to get the bolt out (and back in). Spring is to keep the pads from rattling on test drives when fat cats want to buy a garage queen Porsche.

Oh that spring! Didn't know it was optional.

+1 I did not know the front spring was optional either. Is this common to leave off?

Yes, total PITA for a track car. Leave off after first time changing brake pads. Put back on when selling car.

What's the function of this front spring clip to begin with? I thought its there to keep the pads properly aligned inside the caliper, lest they rotate around the center caliper bolt?

The spring is only for noise prevention - minor movement clicking noise. The pad is held in place by the caliper.

Or you just push / pull the bolt and hit the spring with a small hammer and it pops right out.

If your calipers are still that bright yellow you are not braking hard enough, should be orangy by now, the real late brakers on sticky tires make them look bronze..

Just like how our for steel calipers go red, dark red, maroone, brown.

I wonder if I really need the spring tension thing on my smaller Carrera S calipers then? Just put the bolt throught the pads and that's it?

I got a chance today to pull the pads and take a look. I can see why some of you guys ditch the metal spring retainer. It's kind of a pain to work with.

The pads seem to look ok to me, I've posted pics below to see what you guys think. one of the pads on the passenger side is starting to show the brass rivets. The chips off of the pad are pretty small and are on the edges of the pads. I cleaned everything off with some brake cleaner and reassembled everything. The scraping noise is gone now. New pads have already been ordered/shipped. Install them now, or wait until I wear the pads some more?

How many mm's thick is the pad material? I always heard change PCCB pads at 50% to prevent wear on the rotors. I changed mine when leading edge was 5.6 mm and trailing edge was 6.1 mm. However I am not sure of new pad material thickness. On my new Pagid yellow's (for my steel GiroDisks) the material was 13mm.

Yeah, been told similar by the technicians at the dealership... With pagids toss them if they get under 12mm including backing plate if they are to be used for track... If they are for boulevard cruising, they should be fine....

Also, with regards to the spring clips, they confirmed that they don't need to be used if you don't mind the added noise.... Cup cars use the same callipers and none had the springs on them in the workshop... He showed me the kind of click to expect....

Joe, those pads look about 50% to me. Still good for street use but for your next track session why not invest in a new set? Box these up and you'll have a backup set to get you home if you ever run out on the track.

Lots of people have chimed in on the brass rivets--some say they're softer than the pad compound hence no worries. Me, I'd rather not gamble and replace them.
