interesting observation, however there was not much one could fix on the 997 from the trunk area anyhow? (and that is if something actually broke which is rare..)

There's always talk about Porsche not upping the power of the Cayman as it can't be seen as outperforming the 911. I can't help but wonder if Porsche have subtlety moved the 991/911 into the GT car bracket to make room for the Cayman to become the new Porsche sports car? The new "911" I guess only time will tell and certainly a 991 Turbo and Gt3 will likely lay that one to rest.

I drove one this weekend, and at a launch event a few weeks ago.
I think the true 911 is officially dead with the 991. Its gotten too big and to polished. IMO its not a sports car anymore it's a GT car that drives better than 99% of the current GT cars.
Porsche has a hit on their hands, and I see the 991 outselling the 997 which was their best selling 911 to date. This car will appeal to the masses, not just the Porsche fan. But by doing so IMO lost everything I loved in a 911, those arching curves, stellar steering with feeback, compact shape and a no nonsense interior that said "just get in, shut up, and drive!"
Does the 991 perform better on paper, YES.
Is it easier to drive at the limit, YES.
Is it more tame, YES.
Am I happy with the result, NO.
My plan now is to stock pile 997's and then begin resto-modding older 911's to keep my Porsche itch scratched.

It has adapted to be a better daily driver and faster on the track just as the competition has in the same market place.
I think the balance of daily driver and track day car will be well represented if not the best of the bunch with the new 991.
Dispite those who assume the new 991 is a plush, numbed down grand tourer, i am quite certain it is exceptionally fast in and very rewarding.
In terms of the Cayman, it fills the gap for those seeking a more affordable 911 with the added treat of the weight distribution and compact size.
It will not become the new sports car for porsche because they will not use it in a motorsport CUP platform. This is reserved for the 911 not only for branding but due to the especially longer wheel base and wider track which equates to a more stable/capable high speed track car.

Great points. For me its the rear seats that are the difference between the 911 and Cayman. Not many cars of this caliber I can throw the kids in the back. I for one like the new 991 and can't wait to see the GT versions. Sat in a 4.O RS here in New Zealand a couple of weeks back. 1 of 2 here. Now that's a nice 911!!
the 911 is evolving but will remain the true sports car of Porsche.

i believe the new 991 will gain a whole new market of first time 911 buyers.
(would be Aston, BMW,Merc etc. luxury coupe buyers)
however it may also lose some longtime faithful 911 buyers.... but where are they gonna go?

I drove an S on saturday for an hour or so through twisty back roads etc. They only have PDK so far. I think it is official, the 911 is no longer a "sports car". Just too big and wide, and not enough feel. Crazy capable... and cracking off upshifts wile the rear was stepping out was sick fast and fun, but it just doesn't feel exciting otherwise. Yes it will be better for racing and fat businessmen who sit in commute traffic. It looks and feels more like a AMG or aston martin competitor... not my thing. I want a nimble sports car because of the feel and fun factor, not because it turns faster laps at the ring. Why not just get a GTR? The other way I know the 911 has jumped the sports car shark, is I couldn't pick a color. I have always loved the crazy fun colors that look so right on a proper porsche. Even red would look just dumb on this car, forget orange or mexico blue... those days are gone. Try metallic brown or gold! Hello 928, we've finally gotten there. The good news is the Cayman has room to grow into the "funster" for ripping around the track and backroads. Unless the next GT3 is way different, I just cant see it for me. Gonna need to find a sweet 997, and keep it.

EDIT: It also feels funny sitting in such a large, luxurious GT car with a rattly 6 cylinder behind you (only rattly at idle etc.) It seems it should have a rumbly V8... in front? And, with this car, is there still room in the lineup for a 2 door Panamera? I don't think so. The turbo of this car will be a real monster... insane fast.

What's amazing is how much bigger the 991 looks next to the 997 in the garage picture. Nice garage BTW. The 997 already looked so much bigger than the 993. The 991 next to the 993 is going to look huge! Can someone please get this picture for comparison?

depending on the 991 GT3 i may just keep my 997RS as a track only car and have a 991GT3 as a daily driver.
However, if the 991GT3 is faster than my stripper 997RS on the track im going to have a problem....
Might have to convert the 997RS back to a street car and buy a 991CUP...

Here are my 993TT and 996TScab next to each other and even then you can see the size difference from air to water:
