The "Porsche understates its flywheel hp" myth seems to stem from tuners using chassis dynos who want the numbers they show after tuning to be higher than they would be if said tuned engine were strapped to an engine dyno and a manufacturer style braked test carried out.
Have a look at page 7 in the link below. 7 to 9% is the average loss for a normal transmission.

The people who make these hub dynos have tested so many cars and take it very seriously, if you want to be educated on this subject spend an hour looking at their web site.

996 GT3, with Sharky 3.9, 33/8 Guard R&P, some lightening, and some cheap Cup Aero parts for the 996 would eat 4.0RS all day long. No nannies is even better.

This is what I will do when my 6GT3 needs an upgrade. I do not like the electronic nannies.

Interesting stuff. About 10 percent increase. I wonder if you can feel this on the street. I owned a 3.8 but have not driven a 4.0. The difference would certainly show up on a race track.

you can notice it on the road. i gauged my 4.0 vs. a friend's 3.8 and the difference from the start of the run is very noticeable already. the 4.0 would just keep gaining lead -it's not even close.

I was talking more of a seat of the pants feel. If you line um up of course there is a difference.

37hp and 25 torque is a substantial gain
with this kinda power it would most def. pull on the 3.8
being worth the extra lump sum of money is possibly another story.
That's up to those who own the car
4.0 owners would you say its worth the extra money???

If u do any such engine upgrade be prepared that it'll be extremely difficult to sell the car thereafter(u won't recoup what u invested in motor unless u part it out). If its a keeper- go for it : ). Mike

Had a 3.8rs which I recently sold and loved. Got my 4.0 rs 2 months ago and much more seat in the pants kick and pull. Even surprised me what a difference. Pulls like one gear lower so third pulls as hard as second forth as hard as third etc. Feels like turbo kind of torque and a bigger difference than the numbers represent. Also had a 997.1 before the 997.2 rs and the delta seems more pronounced. Have only driven it on the street. Truly a magnificent engine. I also looked into price for 3.8 to 4.0 upgrade and it was 40k and for this reason also felt 4.0 price was not too bad.
