Thanks for the tips. Peter, I'm still able to unlock the doors using the key fob so I think the battery is still good.

German cars use the indicator switch to leave one side (left or right) of the side lights on as park position depending on which direction the switch is left. This is a legal requirement over there.

I did some checking, and the ignition switch was changed between the 996 and 997. There have been a number of failures reported on the 997 as well, but the removal and replacement is somewhat easier.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread
BUT I think I'll keep my bullet proof 996TT after reading all of this, it has really scared me off 997 GT3's.
