let the car run a minute before you turn it off when you park it. it will rarely smoke.

For me the car smokes every timeisis started cold and it emits a very large cloud. Say enough to smoke up a two car garage. I will post some video tomorrow. Thanks for the responses.

997.1 GT3 here, picked up in Germany in late '06

had a front shock die in the first 3 mos, replaced under warranty

RMS leak. took the dealer FOUR tries to get it right, but has not leaked at all the past few years, so its well and surely cured

one of the speakers was apparently dead, replaced under warranty (i never use the radio, so i didn't even realize it til the dealer pointed it out)

coolant hose blew out. luckily happened AFTER i'd parked her from lapping. pressure must have popped the hose out as she was cooling down, as coolant barfed out several minutes after i parked.

water pump died. we saw this because of slight coolant drip.

i have a base interior-- no leather, and with our hot humid conditions here, i notice the rubberized surfaces like right at the top of the dash where those plastic vents are at the sides, is easily scarred. run your finger nail against it with moderate pressure, and the coating get scratched.

intermittent "click" when trying to start. sounds like the clutch microswitch thing, but my dealer cleaned the grounds and it happens maybe 1 in 20 starts now.

still in love...

left bank variable valve timing gear counterbalance failure
identified and repaired (6 weeks off the road/track)
another local club driver experienced similar issue at Bathurst and cooked engine
both replaced under warranty
other than that no issues in 2 years other than normal wear and tear, with over 12000kms of track and targa time

997.1 gt3 here. Some noise underneath the car when clutch is not depressed, goes away when depressed. What could the problem be, if any?

Also, since car was sent to Manila, the battery was dead and could not open trunk to replace the battery. We have since replaced it, but now the key won't release from the ignition unless I poke it with the supplied wire. Any thoughts on a fix for this? I read somewhere that a possible fix would be to remove the battery to reboot everything, but I'm hesitant to do it. What do you guys think?

does your car have lightweight flywheel?
it makes a rattling noise when clutch is not depressed.

The rattling noise is the price you pay for a light flywheel. It is normal and every 997 RS has it as standard equipment from the factory. Normal cars have a heavier dual mass flywheel which is designed to dampen those vibrations at the expense of slower throttle response.

Thanks for the info, Bob. Any ideas for a quick fix for the "key stuck in ignition" problem?

Can it be as simple as the battery in the key fob is dead?

I have seen this on both 996 Turbo and 996 GT3. Probably the same on the 997's. The ignition switch, which lives behind the lock mechanism, is a frequent failure. Symptoms are either key gets stuck in the ignition, or it pulls out without actually shutting down the electrical systems (radio keeps playing, for example).

To get the key out, often wiggling it vertically will eventually make it release.

Replacing the ignition switch is not too difficult. On the 996's, it is actually a VW-Audi part that costs $6.25 at NAPA, vs. $39 from Porsche. There are some DIY's for the replacement available if you search. It is MUCH easier to do if you remove the left dash a/c duct so you can reach in and remove one of the screws holding it onto the back of the lock. The other one you have to get from below, with the edge of the seat buried in your left side, and the clutch pedal stuck in your ear.

try moving the indicator stalk back to the middle position. on some other cars key won't come out if you switch car off with indicator on.
