front main seal leak (typically warranty replacement, can lead to crank case wear and thus warrant case replacement too)

limited slip differential wear (most people ignore it but you can modify with shims or replace with better aftermarket unit)

calliper thread wear ( convert to studs and nuts like cup car)

coolant hose fitting failure (replace with better fittings)

shifter cable wear (can be replaced with 996 CUP cables however most owners live with it unnoticed)
This list is spot on... My 996.2 GT3 has has an RMS replaced, and blew a coolant hose... Other than that, it has been a tank.

And btw - someone mentioned not driving them in the snow. ONLY the 996 GT3s did not have corrosion protection. All 997 GT3s are sealed and ready for winter driving! In fact, my next DD (Jan 2013) will be a 997.1 GT3 in white... Put on some Blizzaks, and let it snow!

In addition to what has been noted earlier:

Problem 1: some rattles from B pillar and rearview mirror, worked them out through dealer/warranty

Problem 2: lots of finger prints on the side windows from the people stopping by to check it out !

Problem 3: seriously addictive, no solution to this particular one

Oh yes - all current GT3s (pre-991) have Metzger engines. Unfortunately, Porsche chose to epoxy the coolant fittings. In extreme heat on the track, the epoxy breaks down and the hoses pop off. Many choose to take out the engine and weld the fittings in place (from memory 10-12 fittings). For those that DE and use coolant, some of the hoses are right over the rear left tire - and snap spins are the result. The solution to that is to use water-wetter + water as a coolant... That is the route that I took personally.

Lots of discussion on this on the Rennlist boards via search...

Crankshaft seal went a few times, warranty job
Fuel pump and fuel relay pump (shows up as misfires and car loses power). Warranty job
Clutch can go if you are new to the car... but I wanted a sports clutch anyway.

Nothing major really.

Power steering line burst... Warranty repair
RMS leak... Warranty repair

Parked under a snowdrift (in a garage) 5 months of the year.... Worst GT3 problem of all!!

My oil temp. indicator went out at ~7000 miles. Haven't taken it in for repair yet but it's probably no biggee.

I sure do love the car, regardless of the quirks.

Agree with most above. I had a 996 with 55k miles. Only things to add are a leaky strut or two, and the catalytic converters tend to go after a while (obviously can be taken off anyway but if you are keeping street legal, these are pricey suckers (I believe about $2,000 a pop and there are 2).

The real ticking time bomb are the coolant fittings in my mind. Just keep that in mind the next time you're tailgating another GT3, waiting for the pass. Always makes me a bit nervous.

"All 997 GT3s are sealed and ready for winter driving!"

At the risk of thread drift, is this so? I always thought that they were not undersealed hence the shorter body warranty. I was going to take mine out tomorrow unless there is salt on the road, but maybe I am being too protective and should use it more.

Back to topic, RMS (every year) and FMS both on 997.1.

My engine had a bearing failure at 11,500 miles. Park Place replaced the engine under warranty 2/10.
Invoice only showed an alignment and four new tires! I wasn't allowed to take any pics, very hush hush. No problems since.
