Since you are asking this question on a public forum after already getting your answer from your inner-circle of friends the only car that is right for you is to find a RS 4.0 and be done with it. ;-)
Honestly you will be happy with either car you are asking us about. The RS is a little bit more track oriented but is very easy to get around on the street and trolling for nurses at the local hospital. The GT3 lacks some of the track options the RS has but it still will attract the local nurse population to take a ride with you.
Bottom line is to find a car that you like, either an RS or GT3 in the color, options, mileage, price range you are looking for and buy it. You will fall in love with both cars once you get them in the garage.

Agree 100% with Yoops. I bought my 997.1 GT3 new and at the time, I thought the the up-charge for the RS was highway robbery. Four years later, I think the up-charge was a bargain and I'm kicking myself for not getting an RS. An orange RS would be a lifetime car, whereas my red GT3 is a 5 year car

When I bought my black .1, I would look at the orange .1RS nearby and think "what a silly looking car"
Now, when I see the .1RS, I think "what an unforgettable, lifetime car". Wish I went RS. Won't make that mistake again, will never buy a non-RS gt3 again. It will either be the 991 mkI RS or 991 mkII RS. Or both. Probably the mkII...

I have the GT 2 folding seats, and for a few bucks you can have a second set of seat cushions made with comfort in mind. I had an extra inch of foam installed on new factory cushions and had them covered in blue! Now I have comfort when I want it and the original cushions for track days! They Velcro allows you to switch them out in less than 2 minutes!
Do yourself a favor and buy the RS!

Coming from someone who owns a .1... who has basically been spending time and money to bring it as close as possible to the .1 RS...
Go RS. If you are a Porsche-phile, and you love the cars, and you know the history, and appreciate the pedigree, there is something about having an RS. A GT3 is excellent, and easier to look at, cheaper, etc, but the RS is just that much more special. For a garage queen or track day, the RS is for you.

As for the second part of this quote I think thats very well put. rs has a history and they may just be dragging on the name like any brand at the moment but its a great car and lives up to the RS name. It's a history and that makes it more special.

Ur a driver, get the rs. Keep a .1rs on your radar...u can run down standard .2's all day long
mine is lightly modded and still totally streetable, and i wont ever sell it.

In this group there aren't going to be too many people who will talk you out of putting the pedal to the floor. I've had 996 and 997 GT3s and now a .2 RS. I got the RS as I wanted the best track car I could get and still drive it to and from the track (it has a half cage) as I live in an urban area where it isn't practical to park tow vehicles etc. for that purpose, the .2 RS is a superb car (though expect the upcoming Camaro ZL1 might be just as entertaining at a fraction of the cost). If you are already tracking the BMW, I'd get a .2 GT3. The car is spectacular just as it is. Except in this rarified air you won't ever hear a bad word about the power or the steel brakes. The .2 is a big improvement over the .1 and the car is rare and aggressive looking. As great as the RS is, the rear wing makes it pretty blind on the streets and as you note, the look-at-me effect is prett hard to avoid, graphics or not. These are all great cars - I'm not convinced you need to pay the premium for an RS car.
