Default RS purchase opinion

Hello everyone,
First time for a RS - could use some straight forward advice.

Looking at an 08 RS in orange with black wheels, full leather, sport chrono, nav, roll cage, and a few more options that I have to inquire about. Mileage is 2,100. The current owner just received his 4.0. My intent is mainly a street car with occasional track.

1) Any disadvantages/dislikes on the 997.1 compared to the 997.2?
2) Your opinion of a 08 purchase now or wait until April and buy a 997.2?
3) Orange?
4) Just any thoughts you guys may have

Thanks - I appreciate all of the knowledge and experience you all have.

Mark

1) how much track time do you plan on
2)what is cost

If you track 997.2 non rs gr3 is far superior to 997.1rs for same money

Personally I love the pumpkin orange and euro trash green 997.1

Mark:

Car sounds beautiful and likely in flawless condition given the miles. I would advise no matter what car you settle on, have it PPI'd for piece of mind. That said:

1. I'm personally partial to the .2 cars for a number of reasons but think the .1 RS is and will always be a very special car. Can't see any real downsides to one other than the potential of RMS leaks being more likely than the .2 cars.

2. I would ask, price aside, which car really inspires you: The .1 RS or a .2 standard? Whatever one you like better, buy now and don't worry about later.

3. LOVE orange. Not everyone wants a car that is that extroverted though. Wouldn't bother me.

4. I think the .1 RS or .2 RS are the smart buys right now and don't think you could go wrong with either. If you are going to track more, the .2 might be a little more attractive.

To me, the most important thing is touched on in point 2: which car makes your heart skip a beat? Buy that one!

Best of luck and let us which you land on.

The 2007-2008 model year is a great buy.
has the famed last of 5 lug wheels (2010+ has center lock wheels)

What type of seats are in this 2008?
What brand roll cage?

The less options the better in a RS. Nav, sport chrono etc are for the birds.

Colors are wild on the 2007-2008 models.
The orange looks fantastic but draws attention. Not great for bumper to bumper traffic or parking in public lots.
Everybody rubber necks at an Orange RS

That being said I have owned two Orange RS porsche to date when i originally wanted black or white.
The orange is really something in person and i cannot bare to part with it.

The 2010+ has more torque and power which is not noticeable on the street in comparison however the additional torque can make low rpm driving more pleasurable in the city.

The gearing in the 2010 is also better.

The 2010 shocks are also said to be more compliant for street use.

Rule of thumb is always go for the newest model RS you can budget.

But if you can score a low mile 2008 RS for under 90k then you are hard pressed to walk away if you really like it.

I would part w/ my Wht. '11 RS before the '07 RS orange car. Buy the '08, and better value most likely.

I am not sure about the .2 gt3 being "far superior" to a .1 RS

I would go with the best RS you can afford

As a mainly street car I would choose a .2 GT3
Almost the same price, more power and torque, better suspension and downforce on the .2GT3 is almost the same as the .1RS, also weight should be very close.

From a collectibility standpoint .1rs for sure if untracked/unmolested ie bubble wrapped since 1st Rs to come to USA. 3.8 Rs is killed by 4.0 Rs. Only thing special with regular 7.1 and 7.2 and 7.2 3.8 rs for collectors is completing their collection and better be pristine. Mike

Sorry everyone - here is some info on the right now or later purchase.

I can buy the 08 now for between $100K and $108K and keep my 2010 M5
- or -
Wait and buy a 10 or 11 RS, but turn in the M5 and buy a Mini to drive day to day.

OOPS, Must be a brain reboot, can't believe I left this info out. This IS the reason, I asked the question.

Thanks again,
Mark

.1 RS and sell m5 and buy a truck and trailer
Daily the truck when your weather is bad and drive the RS when it is not

What? Over $100k is expensive!

-The .2 suspension is supposed to be better, other than that nothing major between .1 Rs and .3 GT3 (non RS)
-If you wait until spring the prices are likely to go higher.
-I love orange and it is definitely a collectors car in that color

Hello guys,
I appreciate the replies. The car is in perfect shape. The current owner hardly drove it (obviously). He has quite a car collection, so the dollars that is asking for may be negotiable. Just like a few others here - got his 4.0 and doesn't need two RS's.

Options on the 08:
640 - Chrono Package Plus
XXZ - Foot Rest Aluminum
XPA - Thicker Steering Wheel-Leather
810 - Floor Mats in Interior Color
CNE - Spoiler Lip Painted
P74 - Bi-Xenon Headlamp Package
P23 - PCM 2.1 w/ Extended Navigation
XME - Rear Ctr Cons Painted Extr Clr

The roll bar is from Porsche and is painted black, the seats are not the carbon fiber sport buckets - probably the standard seats (?).

Not sure which way to go guys - I will check this thread over the next few days and see what all of you have to say. I really would like to keep my daily driver M5 (love the car), but a new Mini Countryman 4 is doable. CRAP!!! I guess its a good problem to have.
