Emailed dealer. They said to bring it in (dealer is in NY, car is in FL). Long drive.

~8600 miles. Maybe half track.
Kris, any Porsche dealer can do the warranty work.

add another.

My PP went at Summit Point 3 weeks ago. The local P dealer's certified GT3 mechanic was also at track doing DE that day. At the track he ID'ed it as PP failure. Took it to dealer following Monday. Porsche replaced PP (with 4.0 parts) under warranty along with destroyed bell/trans housing and other misc related parts that got killed by destroyed PP. He also noticed 1st gear was worn and he replaced that as well under warranty.

Car was bought used in March with 3100 miles (supposedly only 4 track days). I then drove it 700 miles from Chitown to WDC. Then only trailered to DE's -- 3 days at VIR, and then failed second day at SP.
Got it back last Friday, took it to NJMP on Monday/Tuesday - worked fine.

Just got mine back all buttoned up and ready for my next event. New clutch does feel a light lighter or I'm just use to pushing the heavier GT clutch

So, essentially VW has acknowledged the problem, because they are installing the GT3 RS 4.0 pressure plate and clutch disc.

This only says one thing: Every single 3.8RS came with a defective PP and clutch disc from the factory, but VW won't issue a recall, you only get it fixed when it fails and the cars is under warranty.

Of course, a car sitting always in a garage, or being driven on public roads at Kia Sedona speeds won't break the clutch, it only fails when the car is used as it is supposed to be used.

Can 3.8RS owners un-vote from this Poll ?

Looks like that is exactly what has happened....
Mine was one or the 1st to fail, Porsche replaced it with another one which has also failed before they have redesigned it by installing steel bolts on the new one...
Having seen this many times now I know exactly when the failure occur...
Anyone here still with the defective part who feels that the gears suddenly have become slightly more difficult to engage while driving should abort and take it to get it inspected to avoid more damage to the clutch or bell housing...
Porsche have not issued a recall but have replaced the failed ones...sounds like the RMS issue on the RSI...no recall but will fix it if it fails, however when you are out of warrenty and you have a failure be prepared to shell out a great sum of money to get it upgraded.

I had a few PMs to make it a sticky again, so here you go, to the top for a month or so.

I've also added 3 more confirmed failures of PP. (One of them with 29000klm with zero track time).

Best,

So if my .1RS is exhibiting pressure plate issue, is the consensus that it should simply be replaced with oem 3.6 parts?

Came off track today and could not get it into gear - master tech said he would bet his life on failed pressure plate...

Cut short my day :-(
My rev matching must have been decent because I only noticed rolling back into paddock

3500 on car when I bought it
9000 on car now
80% track

(I did not vote as I do not have a 3.8)

Car goes in tomorrow - is there an "upgrade" clutch kit I should be considering?

I know what a Burt clutch smells like, and I do smell something after driving the car but it's wierd....almost like burnt leaves.... Is this what it could be? No symptoms yet but I have also not tracked the car nor driven aggressively on the street for any length of time.

My 2011 997 GT3RS (minus dumb decals), has 3500 miles, and 2 track days. Am I going to get clutch problems around 12,000 miles, or before? Some clutch!

Probably. You should trade it in for something else.

Wanted to chime in on this again. I had been having issues with the clutch/transmission (still not sure which one is the problem). Driving around town, the car shifts fine. On long drives, the car is very difficult to get out of gear into neutral. Car has never been tracked. Dealer replaced the clutch and pressure plate at 2,000 miles. Car now has 3,000 miles on it and the issue still exists. RSRRacer I have the same exact smell. The car has been to the dealer 4-5 times. They have bled the clutch, changed the tranny fluid 3 times, etc... This issue is starting to become very frustrating!!! Should not be happening on a car like this with 3,000 miles on it!

Default PP and clutch replaced without failure

Hi all:

after engine out due to the notoriously (also) well know camshaft adjuster problems (half of the engine parts needed to be replaced) I had the original PP and clutch inspected. Both have been in excellent condition (close to new). Car had 5000 km (approx. 3200 mls) and 3000 km have been on track (approx. 1900 mls).

I am the second owner and actually do now only track and no street. I decided to byte the sour apple and have the parts replaced by 4.0 parts on my cost. This happens when you read to much about problems in Rennlist .

After engine out I had 400 km on the street to break the (basically new) engine in at least a little bit before I was back on track. Now I have 700 km track on it without any further issues.

Best regards

Peter
