Interesting thread guys

Why do you think this is happening to the 3.8RS in particular?

I know most people believe these cars are reliable, but one thing is wanting to believe, and another one is reality.
Rad....you are correct the 3.8RS do have their fair share of Gremlins. I believe more than the 3.6RS

I'll bet if a group of fiat owners actually tracked their cars as much as we did, their list would be much much longer

1) bad design of the clutch
2) I think the design load of the PP / clutch is OK with teh lower Hp / Torque of the 3.6L. The 3.8 might be right over the threshold.

Keep in mind, depending how you drive......we are using a street clutch (one with springs) in a race enviroment. Mine went after 6,000 track miles. Most race cars woudl have had the clutch replaced by then as prevenative maintenance.

1750 miles (900 track) no problems yet. Are there any symptoms or warnings?

You are asking for 3.6GT3 (Unaffected) or 3.8RS these are the only ones with all the failures. No warning at all here.

I have a 3.8RS. My avatar was my "old" GT3. Hopefully I will get the vibration before mine pops.

Mine still okay after 3k track miles. Have witnessed THREE very low mileage (<2k miles) 3.8 RS's fail at the tracks here--one had a failed release spring, two others had grenaded pressure plates. All three had skilled drivers (i.e. unlikely to have caused damage through money shifts...)

Looks +vely like a systemic defect to me.

Gents, thanks for voting. I know we have more 3.8 RSs here so don't be shy and vote. : )
Adding a description of the usage and current miles would be nice.

So far, it doesn't look good for the car that successfully finished the 24 Hours Nürburgring race.
Unlike you, I bought this setup for my 6 before the 4L updated clutch and PP were announced, so now I am trying to decide if a change before something fails is a wise move or not.
For those of you that own a 7RS and (might) face this issue , my best wishes for a free replacement from Porsche. It is obvious from the silent replacement of 3.8 parts for the newer 4L versions that they somehow acknowledge the issue. (although even in the last PET, the 3.8 part # still stands)

PS. Now we have to start a thread to discuss pressure plates and clutches. The 3.8 LWFW is a super light / race proven old cup part so it will definetely stay.

One of the ears broke off the throwout bearing. Approx 14,000 miles. Lower half of clutch pedal travel became all of a sudden very stiff. Clutch did not want to fully disengage. Putting all the 4.0 stuff in there even thought PP and disk looks ok.

I was never aware before this thread that the 3.8 RS had any particular issues. With my regular GT3 at about 10k miles I started getting a problem where I would get occasional grinding at high rpms going from 2nd to 3rd. It would rapidly go aware with a good session at the track. I thought its could have been a sticking synchro, but my mechanic at Porsche said it was from the pilot bearing being affected by moisture when driving on the street. The issue completely disappeared at around 12k miles. Also around that time, I noticed the gearbox got a lot smoother, especially when cold. Now with 18k miles including about 30 track days I am often surprised at how well it shifts dead cold and how slick it gets completely warmed. It is simply a lot smoother than it ever felt when it was new.
