OK...question...why are all of you so gaga goo goo over the Mezger engine and want to keep the old Mezger engine in a new 911?

The 9A1 has less parts, no RMS or IMS crap to deal with, built in dry sump, sits lower in the car, weighs less and can be made more powerful.

Wolfgang answered with a resounding 'NO'.

However, I am not 100% certain he understood correctly the question before he answered it. There were other times when a Porsche PR guy would translate in German the question because he didn't quite understand it. So I don't know if this was the case in this instance and he misunderstood. He could have, for example, assumed the question meant a replacement for the 911, rather than an additional model. Remember this was a PCA crowd where the 911 is omnipotent. And all members of the Porsche family know well not to touch that dangerous 'electric' third rail in Porsche myth...remember CEO Dr. Ernst Fuhrmann?

In any case, I don't feel as confident of this particular answer as I did of the direct responses I got to the PDK question on the 991 gt3 from both Detlev von Platen and August Achleitner!

if you google it you come up with a number of hits quoting the CEO confirming this model based upon a new cross brand platform for the group; Porsche, Lambo and Audi ...

So I *think* he must have misunderstood, or something changed radically recently...

Because Porsche has spent the last 40 years refining it. It's proven.

I tend to agree. He was very fast saying 'NO', almost to the point that he did not want to discuss the issue. A mid-engine high-priced GT above the 911 makes sense for PAG.

Correct, Tony. I think Wolfgang misunderstood the question...or intentionally punted. I also think we will see this mid-engined 'super' car too positioned at say $250K/$350K. Aside from technological needs to fight effectively the increasingly tougher gt competition from Ferrari & others, there is a marketing void between the most expensive upcoming 991 gt3/gt2 models and the nearly US$1MM 918 Spyder pricepoint!

By the way, I also talked to someone from PAG at Rennsport IV that mentioned that they are working on a version of the current 'Sport Bucket Seat' that will have some significant adjustment possibilities over the limitations on the current 'Buckets' found in the gt3's, gt2's, Spyders & Cayman R's. I don't know if they will be available on the next gt3...but we will see them eventually.

Ruf and 9FF have shown that there's a viable market there. I think PAG would be foolish not to capitalize on it.

It's one thing to keep the Cayman down under big brother 911, but with the Carrera GT and 918 out there they've already done other midengine supercars that whoop the 911's ****. Why not do something that can directly funnel sales away from Ferrari?

IMS, no, but RMS, you bet it has one.

And knowing porsche, it will leak at some point.

Looks like we won't have long to wait. According to the current Panorama issue, M Muller indicates that the 991 GT3 will be here in " the middle to second half of next year".

Quick Reply: 991 gt3 and gt3 RS will get PDK after all!
