Default 4.0 exhaust options and sound

it will be here shortly and I plan to install either a SW or GMG bypass. Both vendors tell me installation is the same as 3.8. Does anyone have any firsthand experience with the 4.0 and bypass options ? is the stock 4.0 setup (with titanium Akrapovic muffler) noticeably different in sound than the stock 3.8 ? The car should come with titanium tips which would bolt straight onto a SW bypass. Thanks for any input.

Replacing the titanium akrapovic with any SW/GMG/whatever bypass will be a downgrade. You already have the absolute cream of the crop.

Higher flow cats, larger displacement, and higher flow airbox should yield a slightly different sound - my guess a bit deeper with more intake noise. I wouldn't waste money on center exhaust swap - little to gain and will detract from originality of car. If you're after real HP gains it'll require a full system upgrade.

this is one you just don't touch save for the wheels. just drive

when people ask me "is that factory?" i prefer to say, "yes it is". else it's all just another aftermarket product.

Have there been differences noted between the 3.8 RS and the 4.0 RS exhaust? I thought both were produced by Akrapovic. If that is the case go ahead and get the the Sharkwerks, the sound improvement is well documented here.

Also, for all those saying the 4.0 is going to be a collectors item in the short term, everyone needs to get real. These cars are not going to hold their value (cough GT2 RS), and the exhaust is possibly one of the easiest pieces to return to factory.

Unless the owner plans to own the car for 15+ years this car is only going to decline in value. And given the fact that we are all uber Porsche enthusiasts, i doubt any 4.0 owners are going to be able to deny their desire for a 991 GT3 and even if they do, definitely not a possible 991.2 GT3.

I'll try to get a sound clip for you... it's the same part as the 3.8RS ti exhaust (which btw has been known to crack on the front side before). Going to stainless on our part the whole set up is still 8 pounds lighter so you're not adding weight either. The sound is different but so far I've sent three out to 4.0 owners abroad and need to get a clip

+1 You need Sharky if you take it to the track because the OEM will brake quickly.
Sounds better too.

For street driving you could leave it stock, for track you can't.

Heh thanks and for sure I think the different metallurgy (mixing a partial steel and then ti set up) hanging off the back like that and with high EGTs at the track has caused a good few failures of the stock ti system at the track. It separates at the seam/joint dead center opposite the tips;( The good news is Porsche does warranty that or of course you can use this

Alex: Sure you've covered topic in past but just curious why you don't offer a Ti version?

For sure a good question and I think for a few reasons we don't.... For one our entire system is already so much lighter than the stock GT3 steel exhaust and half the weight of the Titanium one too:

Weight of the stock:

Weight of stock RS titanium:

Weight of ours:

So whilst we could "maybe" save another 2.25 pounds off of the 5.5 pound system wight have for the cost involved would it really be worth it? Probably not. Not only is the cost prohibitive but then you get into the problems of movement, heat expansion and cracking which we've seen on these cars over the years already with Ti The sound would also get somewhat "tinny" if you know what I mean. So I guess for reliability and cost

The Titanium rear center muffler in the 3.8 RS develops cracks. I know of 2 people with failures, so I would expect the same muffler to developed cracks in the 4.0RS.

However, most 4.0 RS will be ornaments, so the mufflers won't crack in garage storage or trips to Starbucks.

If you want a better sounding 4.0RS Sharky produces awesome sound and no resonance.

another vote for ditching the stock stuff for SW bypass and larger tips -
save the stock stuff for when you sell the 4.0

Thanks for all of the input. I'm looking forward to losing money on this particular car. It might actually be worth it !
