Modern cars, no matter what brand, get faster and faster

But definetely lack soul !

Sure the 991 GT3 will be as fast or faster than a 997.2 GT3 RS, but I can guarantee it will be less involving

From now on it will be a matter if you want to be the fastest guy with a new car or if you want to be the happiest, most involved guy with your Mezger car. I want to belong to the second group !

It is a really good achievement, if the 991 GT3 comes with PDK it will probably knock another 15 sec out of this time as well. PDK alone is worth 10-15 sec on the ring, that easily makes up for the 15 hp deficit of the 991 S w.r.t the 997 GT3....

Before I purchased my GT3, was seriously considering the GT-R. Loved it on the street. Then drove it on the track. I am confident I could run faster lap times in the GT-R but it was completely boring, uninvolving and did not require much of its driver. I truly hope the 991 isn't heading down that road.

No doubt the 991 GT3 will be excellent, and as we have read many times on this forum the Mezger engine is not without fault given the coolant line issues.

The 20'' standard wheel on the 991 Carrera S did however strike me as especially caving to market trends. There is simply no reason for them other than (perceived*) style/appearance. In fact it can easily be argued that they only function to inhibit suspension and braking performance.

*I think it looks terrible to have such a huge gap between the caliper and the rim

I care about Nurburgring times, because they translate to racetrack performance, and street driving performance as well.

The new 991 S is lighter than a 997 GT3, it has better weight distribution, and it costs $98k brand new. This is going to be a successful 911.

They don't mention which tires they used, I doubt they have a achieved 7:40 on Bridgestone RE-050.

Was probably MPSS since they are to be N-spec homologated on the 991

If that's the case, then

I bought a set of MPSS 3 months ago, and they don't stick as good as the MPSC or RE-11. In the South Florida rain they are amazing, insane grip in the rain, but dry grip is not the best, much better grip than PS2 in dry conditions, but not close to MPSC grip or RE-11 grip. No wonder why no one in the SCCA street tire classes is running the MPSS.

So, on the speculation that the 991S was on MPSS, the same car on MPSC would drop another 3 secs at the Ring. That's some serious performance for a car that is going to be the 2nd to base model on a long line-up of Porsche 911.

Reduce weight, add 75 Hp, add race aero, and the 991 GT3 could be running faster than the 997 GT3 RS 4.0.

Impressive.

got to remember (I know you know this) that the MPSS is the MPS2, and not the MPSC+, replacement so they wont match the dry performance of that tyre or any other R compound ... unless its in the wet!

we will have to wait a while to see an MPSC+ successor using the newer technologies etc found in the MPSS, (if ever)
