Dreaming of a GT3RS - start with a 993?

Hi. I'm a lurker as I don't own an RS nor any Porsche at the moment.
When the time comes (could be sooner or later, but hope within 2 years) I'm pretty set on getting the .2 3RS.
But lately I'm wondering if I should get a 993 or 930 (I just love those models) to get familiar with the RR platform. Or can I skip all that and just patiently wait for the RS to come and learn on that? The reason is that if I go with a 993 or 930/964 in the meantime, it'll slow down the RS purchase by 3-6 months (I think).
I have a Z4M for a track car, and while it's a handful and am nowhere near the driver at the limit of the car, I am VERY curious of all this talk of "you can't drive a Porsche like a BMW. It's an entirely different driving technique."
How's this for Fri food for thought? =)
Thanks everyone!

IMHO, BS.
Very easy to drive, if you can drive somewhat OK. A Z4 is not nearly as forgiving I think.
I drove a '01 Mustang GT for 5 years (From 12K to 60K invested never touching the motor) and was worried I could not "wring out my GT3RS.2 " like my 250HP solid rear axle Mustang. Well, after 3 laps I could "read and write" better with my GT3.1 (Bought to carry me over) then the car I drove for 5 years, about 30 track days a year.
Forget all pre 996 GT3.
Hold out for the GT3.2. Or better yet, buy it now, take a risk and things might just sort themselves out. You live once. I'm always lucky, but worked for me.

I own a 993TT and the next logical step for me points to a GT3 (RS) or even a GT2, so I get where you're coming from.
We recently had a convert who went from the 993TT to a 7.1GT3, and stated it had a similar driving experience and pull.
If your one of the lucky ones to experience both, and scratch both itches I surely would.

Modded 930. If it doesn't spit flames its not worth buying
. A 930 is NOT sanitized like a GT3. GT3 is fast, competant and MODERN. 930 is raw. Throttle is on/off.
You can learn to drive on anything.. what you have now.. a stop gap car.. a commuter car.. the point is to go out and learn. If you learn on an underpowered car, you will simply learn better. You will learn to slide/drift/toss the car around corners because you can't afford to slow down.. 930 is the opposite.. Its best to already know how to steer with the throttle.. have quick hands.. and always anticipate leaving a corner backwards if you mess it up.
If all this scares you, perhaps something with lots of driver aids is more appropriate![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Its amazing how people sometimes feel the need to "progress".. I'll start with a 911SC.. then move to a 993... then a 997TT etc etc. For me, the first car still holds a special place in my heart. Subsequent ones have had to live up to the joy/fun of the first car. Some have done well in this test, others have not. My current car is, by no means a fast car.. but without driver aids, it means its up to ME to make it fast. I like that challenge and sometimes even succeed
If what you really want/dream is a 997GT3 though, then keep saving for it.

Erik has a 997 RS.1 and a Ruf conversion original slant nose 500HP flame thrower 930.
He drives his 930 to go play tennis and stop by for coffee, GT3 to the track..
Says GT3 much faster, more fun and cheaper to keep running.

But that artificial non alcoholic stuff will kill you. We will die happier, fatter and later.

don't spend extra money just to spend it...if you want a gt3, hold out til you can get a gt3. the 996GT3 is really an awesome performance bargain for the price and, like othello- a few minutes to learn but a lifetime to master.
lots of guys have gone from the 6gt3 to the 7gt3 and back to the 6gt3 because of the wheel and tire options, steering feel, cheaper cost in, among other things.
set a budget, and find the best car for that budget.
I've had 993, 993TT and would just say to skip it, you can learn in a 6gt3 or a 7gt3 just like anything else

The 997 platform allows anybody coming from a front engine car to easily enter the Porsche rear engine car without any adverse effects. The design is that good and dear i say better due to corner exit grip.
I came from a front engine car to the porsche rear engine car and never looked back.
One does not need to work their way up from a lessor rear engine car to a GT3. The GT3 can be a perfect starting point because everything works well and is predictable.
The 993 also has the forgiving characteristics of the 996-997 rear engine. 964 and under require a little more finesse when adapting to rear engine.
Now, as to a 993, it is a modern classic. They make great drivers and you can dabble with them on the track.
I personally bought a 993 AFTER my GT3 because they are just that special, you want one for the garage. They make great daily drivers and breathe nostalgia.
So i went in the opposite direction of your intentions.
With that being said, you now know that you can go straight into a GT3.
However,
having a 993 is not a waste of time, especially if you can keep it even with the GT3 purchase.
