Default 6 Spd. WHY?

You guys know that I have had 2 GT3s and really enjoyed the driving experience. Now that I have the 5 spd 928 I get back to shifting quite abit.
I took the PDK out and drove it around my little desert loop out toward Death Valley today and the question that keep coming to mind is, shifting WHY? The PDK is SO much fun, SO much easier, and contributes SO much more to the DRIVING experience that I wonder why, cars bother to use these things any more. I can concentrate on setting up the next sequence and setting up the car and the speed. I just push a button IF the computer hasnt already done what I was thinking.
I remember driving some early 911's and they were like rowing a boat when it came to shifting. IT was SUCH a chore. Newer trannies have made it nicer but the PDK goes SO much more forward, Its more like playing the PS3 or flying a jet simulator. The 928 is quite a step back compared to a GT3 tranny, but then the PDK is quite a step forward from shifting in general.
I can just imagine what a GT3 PDK is going to be like. The C2S is so amazing, I really for the first time cant imagine what a Twin Turbo PDK must be like. Oh boy is the future going to be fun. I just wish I could afford to play there with Porsche.

Awesome as far as automatic manuals go.

Because it still feels so crappy and I don't understand anyone buying them unless you are unable to shift for yourself or sit stuck in traffic often. A reason for me not to buy a Panamera for example.

Luxury cars should feel buttery smooth and a PDK would not do it for me over a quick shifting slush box in a street car, but even in a 911 I don't like the artificial feel at parking lot speeds and I would miss the fun of shifting on track.

Are F1 cars Luxury cars? I dont think Vetel misses shifting at the track.

The 911 in normal mode is NOT artificial at parking lot speeds. You cant feel it shift.
The ONLY way you can get that feeling is to put it in SPORT PLUS at a stop. Or maybe your PDK was bad.
Because thats the wrong way for it to feel.
You must not have much time in one.

Your F1 reference points out PDK is faster. It is. F1 cars feel crappy at parking lot speeds getting groceries, I assume ;-)

I drove one for a week (Pana) and only a little in a Caymen and 911 and I feel it enough to be annoyed by it. So does the SMG and GTR. My wife drove the Ppana and said something feels weird. It was just a V6 Pana, so maybe the others are better. I'll take the fast shifting MB box anytime, except for the hard core track work, but that would be pointless as I would always prefer the manual for the weigh savings and fun factor on track.

Nothing wrong with my left leg or back..

If I wanted a video game, I'd play one. I'd actually like to be involved in the shifting process.

What a horrible example, yet again from you. F1 cars have one single purpose and that is getting around very specific tracks as quickly as possible.

A street 911 is not a race car and you aren't a race car driver.

If you were really so concerned about lap times, you would own a corvette ZR1 and not a C2s. Obviously there were some intangibles that led you to buy the 911, so why can't you understand that speeds of shifting and ease of driving is not everyone's first priority.

Perhaps you are just really bad at driving stick?

Default auto vs manual

I wonder if an automatic wanking machine would be better than manual. Just thinking out loud?

......depends upon where it was made...

harris recently drove a pana 4s manual and loved it. not sure if they available in the states?
i much prefer manual. i like the delay between gears; yes, it's slower, but it adds to the drama.
autos are for luxury cars, when you just want to potter along, without any noise, or bumps.....just a seamless, honey-coated ride after a long day ( or night ) at work or play.

I have to agree with everyone, while PDK outshines manual transmission in terms of performance the fun in rowing is just so different

I'll take my manual transmission, thank you!

Y'all are beating a dead horse. I often wonder what I'd get if I could...ya know. Id bet i have more track miles than anyone with PDK. PDK is really really good at what it does and even though in auto mode it will shift itself around a track perfectly. Actually Speedmerchants PDK race car they let PDK shift for them. I've played around with auto mode on the track but have more fun and like to know what gear I'm in just for fun by shifting PDK myself.

I can totally see why track guys like a manual though...plus maintenance down the road will be easier and possibly less money than PDK. There's a lot of people that can workmon a Porsche manual transmission and I don't know of anyone that can fix a PDK
