GMG & RSS Roll Bar Comparisions...Need Help.
#46
I did not realize the OEM Clubsport bar comes unfinished.....This is beginning to be too much work when I can get a RSS bar bolted to shock towers and either with the weld/bolt in plates or seat belt anchor mounts already painted for $2k or more less.

I have the OEM rear cage in my 6GT3 and it is great, though it does squeak quite a bit. However, If I had a GTS I would not weld any plates to the floor, nor drill through the floor. That would destroy the resellability of the car (which most people think of as a superb street car) and may introduce rust issues down the road.
Am I missing something here?

Interesting thought. I want a bar that connests to the shock towers so there will be a carpet cutting there. I'm not sure if I want to or can do the weld/bolt in plates. Years down the road when I go to sell or trade this car couldn't I just take the plates out and the carpet will cover the holes....or just leave the plates in. If they drilled holes are primed and painted then rust should be no issue.

Personally I think that welding plates into the car "crosses a line" ... any reasonable PPI would find these installed and would probably depending upon the potential buyer, freak them out or would be a bonus. Taking them out would be about as pricey as putting them in ... not too mention replacing the cut carpet.
I think you should go "bolt in" unless it is your intent to flip the car over to being an increasingly dedicated track car.

replacing the rear carpet for the shock towers is about $100 or so for the replacement.

I like the GMG RSR bar as it allows me to do the seat tilt back mod that a few tall guys I track with have done and I like the RSS 930 bar as it also allows the seat tilt back mod but only for the drivers side. However the GMG barr is $900 more than the RSS bar for some reason. Both the GMG and RSS mount to shock towers and bolt to front seat belt anchors.
The OEM Clubsport bar is another couple thousand plus over the GMG/RSS bars and it comes unfinished, welds into the car and after talking to the installer they had to modify the OEM Clubsport bar in cars to allow the seats to go all the way back. To do a OEM Clubsport bar installed and modified I would be looking at almost $6k finished. I'm not to proud to say I can't afford that at this point.

I see the points above and I am not pushing for CS bar, just trying to give you data. The bar comes painted but most paint it to match the car color..
IMHO the plates would be an advantage when selling the RS, but maybe not in GTS. A bolt in is OK and can be completely undone if you don't like it in there when you sell the car and it saves you $1000 or so.
$6000.00 is nuts, did you talk to Gavin the modifications are minimal, Gavin is what 6'7"?

Nope not a dedicated track car...I drive it every weekend and out to dinner and around town during the week. I drive it to and from the track as well...no trailering.

00 or so it looks like to me.

I'm going through the same thing with wheels too! LOL

When we designed our WC bar and RSR bar we took what the factory developed into consideration with some improvements.
The WC bar is modeled after the factory Tequipment bar which mounts to the seat belt anchors.( 996 style)
The RSR bar is also modeled after the factory bar but instead of drilling holes in the floor of the chassis and welding plates our bar mounts to the seat belt anchor at the B pillar. (997 style)
The seat belt anchor area at the B Pillar is re-inforced and boxed which gives it the strength it needs to be a safe anchor location for the main hoop.
We know this as Porsche has tested the Tequipment bar as in the 996 models.
The reason the 997 factory half roll bar mounts to the floor is due to competition regulations of most european series.
The factory roll bar is made of mild steel thin wall tubing which is mig welded.
I believe it is .060 wall thickness or the metric equivalent of that.
Both are WC bars and RSR bars are made of T304 chromoly tubing, all the tubes are laser cut to ensure a perfect fit and when assembled (pre-welding) and leave virtually no gaps between the tubing. They are than welded and the welds are normalized. All of the mounts and couplers are CNC machined and we use aerospace grade hardware throughout.
There is no doubt the factory bar is a good bar.. However it does have some compromises.
It does not offer you the opportunity to move both seats all the way back.
It does require you to modify the chassis- weld plates and cut holes in the carpet.
It also have a tendency to creep and squeak due to the threw bolt coupler design.
These were all compromises which we took into consideration and wanted to eliminate with our WC and RSR bars.
Feel free to email or call if you have any further questions.
