Ok, here's my opinion:
You can not really compare a Cayman R to a 997.2 GT3 or RS. The price gap is huge. The engine, suspension and aerodynamics are so different. Price-wise a 997.1 GT3 is much closer to the price of a Cayman R. Not to mention Porsche is not stupid to build a Cayman that can surpass a 911.
Mid-engine is much easier to learn and control, we all know this. Much easier to drive at the limit in a mid-engine. A 997.1 GT3 is hard to learn due to rear engine, no electronic nannies to keep the butt in check and snappy suspension.
Give the Cayman R to capable hands and I'm sure it will turn pretty close times to a 997.1 GT3. A mkII GT3 is another story since it has more displacement, better suspension geometry etc.
If Porsche had put a 3.4L GT1 engine with 350hp and good rear suspension geometry on Cayman R, then it would give all of us a run for our money

Stats only tell half the story... but here you go.
Interesting thing is that almost all cars shown are carrying around more pounds per each lb/ft of peak torque than the Cayman R does. The new 997.2 3.8 is the only one better. Obviously the CR's 3.4 will have less bottom-end, but still it's interesting.
BTW: I got lazy and didn't look up the official GT3 curb weights, just threw in some approx. real-world numbers that folks have reported. Feel free to correct me...

Interesting char. I don't know how you define "curb weight" but I can give you few weight numbers (all with full tank of gas): My current 997.2 GT3 is 3264 lbs, my '06 Cayman S was 3125 lbs, and this Cayman R was 3027 lbs.
