Default Cayman R Weight vs. GT3

I was at a Cayman Register Tech Day event today. Amazing turn out although we had thunderstorms and heavy rain, there were over 80 people. Event was at Tyson's Porsche in McLean VA, great facilities.

They had 3 Cayman Rs, one had delivered to customer 2 days prior, a blue on, a black on weight scales sold today (!), and a white in the show room.

Anyways, the one on the scales was at 3027 lbs with full tank of gas, which is about 250 lbs lighter my GT3 That is an amazing accomplishment I think. And to boot, it was perfectly corner balanced out of the factory. The car looked better in person too.

That is really light! It's really impressive the car was corner balanced from factory. Now Porsche should start working on factory LSD...

I'm guessing the car didn't have A/C or radio.

I forgot to check that Sinan, the MSRP was $75K.

Cayman R does have LSD

Do you know if that is Aqua Blue or Dark Blue Metallic?

Thanks!

I liked the idea of a Cayman R, my only concern is the durability of the DFI engine on the track. I guess we'll see what happens

Frankly I had the same concern, but seeing how hard the Interseries Caymans run and how fast they run for several thousands of racing miles, I think the DFI engines will be just fine.

It did impress me quite a bit, although I was criticizing it when it was first announced. If I hadn't bought the GT3, which I'd never change of course, I would have bought an aqua R yesterday

To be honest, I just don't understand the point of the Cayman R. It gets the go fast bits from a Boxster in a heavier and more expensive car. I would rather have the best 987: the Boxster Spyder.

+1 Boxster Spyder is where it's at for the 987 line. Would buy one, for my wife of course, right now if I wasn't planning a move! Great car. Good friend of mine just picked one up. Interesting to see how it matches up to my GT3 at the track.

i don't think it can ever hope to match the gt3 at the track. it will make for a great roadcar though!
i love the boxter spyder as well, but it's not really an everyday car. the cayman r could be a fun dd.

I never thought of owning a Boxster; although it is a great car, but I am not a convertible guy. And the Cayman is a very good daily driver IMHO. So an R makes even more sense to me.

Even with -250 lbs to a GT3, they really cannot come close to a GT3 on the track, but it certainly is a great alternative for, especially, first time Porsche buyers.

I think it isn't that light. At 3,027 lbs with a full tank of gas, that Cayman R would be at 2,921 lbs with no fuel.

My 2007 Cayman S with a little over 1/8 of a fuel tank weighs 2,960 lbs on the SCCA certified scales at three events last year. My Cayman with no fuel is at 2,945 lbs with the OZ wheels I use (stock sizes 18x8 and 18x9) and fat 285/30R18 Hoosier A6. My car has the bulky and heavy Bose sound system and the heavier battery (50 lbs rather than the 42 lbs battery in newer Cayman/Boxster).

I would still take the GT3 with the extra 250 lbs.

You realize of course that they share more parts than not. That and the fact the Spyder is lighter and mid-engined it can likely generate higher cornering speeds. On a tight track it might even turn a faster time.
