Default Porsche plans Ferrari 458 rival: UPDATED: CONFIRMED

From AUTOCAR, Porsche plans Ferrari 458 rival

Porsche has plans for a new mid-engined supercar that, if approved by bosses at parent company Volkswagen, will take it into direct competition with Ferrari, McLaren and sister firm Lamborghini.

Conceived as a regular model rather than a high-priced, limited-edition production special, the new two-seater is intended to be positioned above the 911 but below the the 918 Spyder. Roadster and coupé versions are being discussed.
“We’re looking to extend the range,” Porsche boss Mathias Muller revealed in a recent interview. “We’ve got an idea to do another mid-engined model. We’re thinking above the 911 but below the 918 Spyder.”

Muller suggests that the new supercar has already progressed beyond the initial drawing board stage. “We have ideas on styling and design, which we will continue to develop in the coming months,” he revealed. “We’ll also evaluate the economic side and then decide [whether to push ahead].”

UPDATE

FRANKFURT -- Porsche AG is planning to develop a sports car that would compete directly with the more exclusive Ferrari brand, CEO Matthias Mueller said.

"It always irritated me that the (most expensive) 911 tops out at 250,000 euros ($360,000) and then the 918 continues starting at 750,000 euros," Mueller told the German daily newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung in an interview published on Monday.

He added: "In between, Ferrari cavorts around relatively comfortably and without any competition. That is where we need to be. There is still space for a larger sports car, one like the 959 that we built in the 1980s."

Mueller said such a model could cost 250,000 euros to 400,000 euros.

I'm a big Porsche fan, but I'm not sure I will pay Ferrari money for a Porsche, that sort of look like a Boxster...

I like it but the center intake under the plate from this angle makes it look like a carp.

I'd like a Porsche build 458 at a Ferrari price but with Porsche running cost and track durability.
that sort of look like a Boxster...

That's an Audi R8 platform sharing. Cayenne/Panamera engines, more expensive than R8. Clever.

Interesting initial reaction to the poor man's 918. I could well see some R8 technology sharing, but not the chassis or suspension (which are already Gallardo sharing) simply because the magazine reviews would have to tear Porsche a new one.

If Porsche was so completely clueless as to share the R8 platform, hopefully this guy would buy a Porsche R8 to go with his Lamborghini R8.

if new V8 engine is really so good, what is the issue to put it into that next 991 prototype?

Peter, sell RS buy Scuderia. Cheaper maintenance costs, higher reliability. The Scuderia doesn't break as often as the GT3, no RMS leaks, no crappy diff. Parts are affordable and cheaper than Porsche parts (if you know who to ask, and where to buy)

Rad,

Does your comment apply only to Scud or the regular F430 as well?

Still hard to believe the parts would be cheaper from Ferrari than Porsche.. ha!

1. No scuderia money.
2. I doubt I fit in it.
3. Do another 30 Sebring days and call me back how the Scud's doing..
